Top Five Purchased Album Regrets
1. Kendrick Lamar - To pimp a butterfly
This one’s going to be controversial, because I know it got rave reviews. And after hearing all those positive things and the song “King Kunta” I felt confident enough that it would be good to buy the entire album. Boy was I wrong. The rest of the album is mostly random talking and disjointed sounds that can’t really be called songs. There are a few other songs that are maybe passably okay (although I can’t think of any right now), but definitely not worth buying. Wish I’d just downloaded “King Kunta” and saved my money.
2. Babel (Deluxe Edition) - Mumford and Sons
After the absolute brilliance that was this band’s first album, Sigh No More, I bought this totally blind on the day it came out. Unlike the first album, where the tempo and volume changes were used artfully, these songs are full of “OMG I NEED TO SCREAM NOW” moments. There’s a general lack of any stand out melodies. The highlight of the album is their cover version of Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Boxer,” and that’s not even their own song.
3. Girl Who Got Away - Dido
Dido’s earlier stuff is great. Life for Rent is one of my favorite albums ever. Again, I blind bought this when it came out purely based on Dido’s track record. When describing what’s wrong with this album, I’d like to start with one word: cowbell. So much cowbell. Otherwise the songs are totally unremarkable, forgettable, and un-catchy.
4. Battleborn - The Killers
We all know and love the iconic “Mr. Brightside” and other iconic hits from the Vegas band’s first album “Hot Fuss.” Since then their releases have been a rollercoaster ride of good, bad, and...boringly okay. Their second album, “Sam’s Town” was headed by the powerhouse song “When You Were Young” and was filled out with some...okay songs. Day and Age, their third attempt was, at first listen, a snoozefest, but it turned out to be simply an acquired taste. After several listens it grew on me. So when Battleborn came out, I impulse bought it. it was just 5 years ago when the lead single “Runaways” came out, remember? No? Neither does anyone else. Out of respect for the band I’m just going to say “there’s nothing to see hear folks, move it along”.
5. Thor: The Dark World (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Okay, so this one’s a bit of a cop out because I don’t really know why I bought it. After watching the movie I remember thinking “I really like the music in this...it would be good to write to...Imma buy it.” Yeah. No. Just don’t buy instrumental soundtracks. Just because it goes well with the movie does not mean it won’t be boring as hell on it’s own.
