Henri Lehmann painted Franz Liszt in 1839, when the pianist was already a sensation across Europe. Audiences fainted at his concerts, collected locks of his hair and treated him more like a modern celebrity than a classical musician. None of that frenzy appears here. Liszt stands with his arms crossed, dressed in black, meeting the viewer's gaze without a hint of performance. Lehmann strips away the spectacle and leaves only the person behind it.
