Emma came into work expecting another boring day, filing paper work for old law cases and taking notes until her hand cramped. She had taken her time getting up that morning, dragging ass as much as possible. She slowly got ready for the day, changing outfits at least four times and then taking more time to put on a little make up. Emma had even stopped and gotten coffee and a danish, before finally deciding she’d taken enough time and apparated to the Ministry. She sipped her coffee through the atrium, stuffing her mouth with the delicious raspberry danish and getting frosting on her mouth. She said hello to people she knew, smiling and waving and wondering why they were all looking at her like she had three heads.
Emma slipped into the elevator behind someone else, watching the grate close and sipping more of her hot coffee. She tapped her feet, humming a little song to herself and attempting to wipe crumbs off the front of her dress. When they came to a stop at her floor, she felt herself drag her feet and slowly move out of the lift, checking that she had everything. People gave her disgruntled looks and questioning glances. She sneered at them wondering why everyone was acting so strange and she hustled off and down the hall. When she walked into the office, all eyes turned to look at her. Her boss stood up from his desk and waved her in. There was one other person with him. Oh god she thought Am I getting fired? Her brown eyes narrowed slightly as she stood in front of his desk, looking questionably at him and avoiding the other peoples eye contact.
“Emma this is the Head of Aurors.” She looked at him and nodded, before turning back and again looking for more information. “He’s asking if you would lead the Investigation for the missing Department of Mysteries Head.”
“I don’t understand what you’re saying.” Emma blurted out staring up at her boss with her mouth slightly open. She looked from him to the other guy, her brow furrowed.
“It’s actually very simple.” The Department of Aurors Head spoke for the first time. “I need a lead Investigator on the home base, so I’m choosing you. Your boss seems to think you are quite bright and would be brilliant for this position. So with that being said, I’d like you to come back to our office and stay there for the remainder of the investigation.”
Emma nodded again, still not believing what he was saying, but following him out the door anyway. She now understood why everyone had been giving her weird looks. They had named, quite frankly a nobody, head of an investigation. On the way to the office he filled her in on what had happened. The Department of Mysteries Head had disappeared from the ministry and no one had seen what happened, except for the dark mark that was hanging inside the Ministry itself. Her heart beat faster, her mind racing as to how it could’ve happened and again why on earth they wanted her as lead. “Well so what it sounds like is that basically all we know is that a couple of Death Eaters broke into the Ministry, snatched McLaggen without being seen by anyone, and was able to leave the Dark Mark in here as well. Do we even have any leads on where he could be?” Emma looked at him, she was realizing that she was taking on the investigator position extremely well. He shook his head slightly.
“We have a few ideas, but nothing substantial.” He muttered, they had gotten off the elevator onto the Auror floor. “We’ve got you set up at a desk over here. If you need anything, feel free to ask.” And with that she watched as he scurried off to his office and closed the door. Emma had just set down her things when she heard a familiar voice.
