A new idea that just occurred to me thanks to a fanfic The thing is, if you look directly into Poseidon's eyes, they can sometimes show you the emptiness of the abyss, which can drive you mad, as it's not good to look directly into the abyss of the depths.Percy never possessed it directly; it was just that his eyes changed depending on his mood.As he grew, and with him his ichor, that color transformed into the same sensation described in the books as happening when looking a god in the eyes (Ares, first book).You felt the sea in her gaze, the undertow pulling you under while suffocating you, the storm and the galloping of horses in the air BUT. When Percy enters Tartarus (another abyss), he finally brings out that part of Poseidon, so staring at him now can unleash the abyss within him and drive you crazy.
