The Winchesters are… weird, Kevin decides.

He’s grateful they took him in- sure- but sometimes, Kevin sees something so odd he doesn’t know what to do with it.

After the first few weeks, he spots them, shrouded in the blue-light of the bathroom. Sam’s bent down so his head is resting in Dean’s palm and the elder is brushing his teeth. Dean’s got a determined expression on his face and Sam is so unquestioningly docile Kevin knows it’s not the first time by far. Kevin watches, just outside the glow, as Dean wipes Sam’s chin clean with a rag, slaps his cheek, and turns to brush his own over the sink.

A few days after that, he’ll see it again. Dean’s sat beside Sam at the kitchen table, who’s tucked his feet up on the chair to curl around a book. Dean’s huffing at Sam’s distracted state- ignoring a plate of partially-cut pancakes sat in front of him. He’ll raise a defeatist brow before picking up the fork himself, spearing the food, and feeding it directly into Sam’s mouth. Aside from a brief bitch-face, Sam doesn’t protest, only opens his mouth for another.

After Kevin dies, and he’s stuck as a ghostly wanderer, they don’t get any better.

He keeps trying to get their attention, but flickering lights and leaky faucets don’t matter much when they’re a tangled-up mess of limbs- no idea where one starts or the other ends- flush on the Impala’s backseat as it sits, stationary, in the garage. Dean’s practicing tying braids in Sam’s hair, as the younger dozes off on his chest, and Kevin… gives up for the day.

Some samdean agere headcanons…

Little!Sam CG!Dean

Sam never grew out of sucking his thumb as a kid. After their dad’s increasingly angered attempts, Dean bargained it was fine if Sam only did it when their dad couldn’t see. Sometimes it’s the only way he can get to sleep.

So much hand holding/ sleeve holding/ jean-back-pocket holding- the works, anything that boy can hold on to he will. A rip in Dean’s jeans? You know Sam’s fingers will find a way in there. When chatting with Garth or Jody about a case outside, Dean’ll hold Sam’s hand tight so he can’t wander off, bored and wanting to go explore.

Lap sitting- especially bunker era, Dean sitting at the war table and Sam coming in, sitting down on his lap and Dean’s conversation with Cas not wavering for a second, maybe a hand up the back of Sam’s shirt or a bouncing knee to give Sam the contact he’s looking for.

He has a Blankie. A soft scrap of fabric Sam sleeps with, sometimes carried around the bunker when he’s feeling especially sensitive- stuffed into old gym bags or duffel bags or backpacks when travelling.

Uses gear very rarely, may need a dedicated weekend-off for Sam to accept a pacifier, kid cutlery or a bottle from Dean.

Super sleepy regressor- Dean makes sure to put him down for a nap every time and takes him back to bed when he inevitably wakes and goes searching for him, snivelling and soft-footed.

He’s incredibly shy and quiet and often becomes nonverbal if it’s not just him and Dean around when in his headspace. He’s very quick to cry.

Super tactile, as mentioned prior, always wants to be touching/ fiddling anything regarding Dean- his ring, hands, shirt buttons- may sit on his hands when interviewing witnesses or with friends to stop himself.

Loves face tracing and hair brushing, Dean tracing the bridge and point of his nose, his cheekbones, his brow, or sitting him down between his knees in the morning to brush out his bedhead.

Dean wears a couple beaded bracelets around his wrists, cheap and colourful beads on thin elastic, that Sam made for him.

Dean notices one day when Cas comes over to discuss ingredients for a spell, the angel has one around his wrist now too.

Charlie would be one of their only friends who know (aside from Cas, nosy bastard), sussing it out instantly and smirking to herself whenever she notices one of Sam’s tells. She might also turn up with a bracelet or two.

Rowena would definitely get a bracelet, which would result in Sam getting a gemstone one in return, sprinkled with some protection magic.

Around s12, Mary is dumbfounded by her sons’ close bond, wondering why her 34 year old is tugging the sleeve of her eldest for attention. She’s even more dumbfounded by the lack of reaction it gets from everyone else. After a brief conversation regarding Dean’s dating history (which felt like getting blood out of a stone), she assumed the bracelets on his wrists were from Ben, and decided to leave that sore subject alone.

Dean loves calling him Sammy-girl or Sammy-boy, alongside Princess, Sweetheart, Kiddo, Baby brother, Little brother and Baby boy. He’s got a million, including a fuck-ton of niche movie references, but those he frequents most.

Sam calls him De, or De-De when excited, very rarely calling him Daddy/Papa. Dean very much enjoys when that happens, albeit infrequent.

Even if Sam says he won’t need it, Dean always packs it anyway.

There’s a clean bottle, a pacifier, a tiny pack of crayons he swiped from a restaurant two states back, 3 loose hair-bands, and often, something soft, like a plush or a toy.

He’ll notice Sam’s eyes getting wider, gentler, sitting, criss-cross, on the motel bed instead of on a chair or couch. He tries to hide it, every time, frowning and burying his face in the computer screen, but his attention won’t leave big-brother for a second- wanting but never asking.

He’ll nod down to the duffel bag with a questioning eye, and Sam’s face will light up. “Paci?” He’ll ask, hopefully, and Dean’ll nod, reaching to fish it out as Sam bounces in his seat.

He’ll take it from Dean’s hand, delicately, and pop it in with a shy smile. “T’anks, De.” He’ll say, falling back to flop like a rabbit in the sheets. The thump always makes him giggle.

He’ll fall asleep later, pacifier slack between his lips and snoring, his head, heavy on Dean’s chest, octopus limbs wrapping tight like strings on a parcel. The plastic nose of a plush tiger presses into Dean’s ribcage.

The outside world seems to fade away when Sam’s like this, and Dean’ll never take it for granted. His brother’s been through a lot, and, regardless, it’s in Dean’s blood to take care of him.

Dean brings Sam a half-pint of iced tea in a kiddish, plastic cup as he sits at the library table; books and papers and scrolls scattered all over the work surface. Sam’s laptop glows bright and familiar in the dark shadows of the evening.

“Don’t stay up too late, Kid.” Dean lazily chides, leaning down to press a surprisingly-intimate kiss to Sam’s cheek. Sam blinks up at him, slow and tired, before softly, quietly, muttering back, “Okay, Daddy...” Their eyes sparkling in the low light.

Both seem to have completely forgotten about Charlie, sat curled in one of the armchairs that line the room, nose buried in her tablet. She decides to stay quiet, leave them be, and watches as Dean presses his nose to Sam’s temple, breathes him in deeply- just once, before pulling back and heading off to settle down for the night.
