The Overcoats // Little Memory (2015)
Had the pleasure to see Overcoats at Rockwood for the American Singer/Songwriter and Reverbnation free show, before they tuck themselves away in the studio for some months to create their first full length. Pleasantly surprised by the duo, they have no problem creating harmony and a live experience for fans. After the show I found Overcoats’ music online, I now am eager to hear more than the few songs they offer via web, and would urge everyone to keep an eye open for the new album.

I remember when I was in elementary school a while ago and I was sometimes taken out of class to get help with handwriting because my handwriting was very bad and no one could read it. sometimes we used to do other things after we would work on that stuff. I remember the teacher who helped me was a very nice person and I liked her a lot.
I remember one time we did a two person jump rope thing and she taught me a chant. I liked it because I’d never heard it before and I thought it was unique. it went like this.
Not last night but the night before
27 robbers came knockin on my door
I asked them what they wanted, and this is what they said
“Get down, turn around, get outa town!”
It makes me smile to think about for some reason. I liked being taught that.
It’s like stepping into a fever dream. You don’t know exactly how you got there and you’re unable to make your way out...
This is the kind of world you step into when you watch the video for Overcoats’ ‘Little Memory,’ a surrealist scene with the LA-based twosome in one room and a table of comatose guests in the other in front of a bountiful spread. That is, until one of them finally wakes up... And what’s that breakdancer doing in the other room??? It’s quite random and it never really makes sense, but that’s exactly what gives the video its charm, leaving you with more questions than answers that you can’t help but find intriguing.
The track, meanwhile, is a bare bones beauty filled with only light strums of guitar and the heavenly intertwining of the duo’s harmonies, drifting through the dark with a ghostly echo. Although it feels quite eerie, there’s also something quite comforting about the song as each word falls like a dreamy sigh.
Via The 405, the duo explain about the video:
'Little Memory' was the first song that we ever wrote together. The lyrics came to us during a time that we were both trying to let go of people that we had difficult histories with. Knowing that sometimes you have to really cut ties with someone in order to let them live.
Our friend Raphael Linden - a brilliant filmmaker - heard the song and came to us with this surrealist concept for the video. It all just sort of came together. It was a ton of fun to film. We had promised all of the actors a decadent feast, in return for their hard work. We cooked all day to make the food for the banquet scene. Unfortunately, due to the fact that WE cooked it, all of the food was inedible.
