In Memoriam: Little Bit and Rainbow Bridge
Right now, here in Nashville, as I write this it is 11:17 pm. I am seriously considering calling in and taking a vacation day tomorrow...or just calling in sick, and I am beginning to stop being numb and start feeling....so if there are typos in this so be it. You see, I have had 6 cats for some time. Tonight, however I only have 5. Little Bit (one of the 11 year old twins) that never weighted over 4 lbs (well maybe 5 at one point) had to be put to sleep tonight. She had been crying to me for several days, but she had always had a "crying baby voice" and I would struggle to try and fiqure out if something was really wrong or she was just "talking to me". Well, this time something was wrong. She seemed to have bad breathe, and not to be able to eat right...so I got her wet food thinking maybe her teeth were bad..and just couldnt break up food. Turns out that her jaws were maslighed..probaby because she had gotten accidentially bumped off some furniture or something...or who knows. Anyway, she was down to 2 1/2 pounds and the vet assured me that there was really nothing they could...well surgury maybe but at 2 1/2 pds etc. and then intravenuous or stomach tube feeling and weighting only 11 pds and being so weak, etc. So we reached the decision that weak as she was, going on to the Rainbow Bridge was what was best. After all, she was one of Roy's dearest cats, so maybe she really wanted to join him...at least I am telling myself that. I stayed in the room with her, and petted and talked to her while they gave her the sedative, and till she rolled on her side, and I knew she was basically unconsciously. I like to think she knew I was there, close to my little baby as she took her last breaths. Here she is. For those that dont know it already, here is the Rainbow Bridge poem. If this doesnt make you cry, then you aint an animal lover. I am beginning to miss Little already but I like to think of her joining Roy who I am sure is waiting with Leo and Lilly for the 'troop" to get together.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
