Little Companion

This little guy is Mira. I don’t know what he is exactly when I designed him and hell I still don’t know what he is supposed to be. But one thing is for sure. He is the CUTEST thing I’ve ever made💕💕💕

Are you still using a tablet to draw digitally? I was wondering if I could use my Samsung tab 3 and a pen to create art or if I need to buy a more-expensive tablet for my desktop PC.. any tips?

I do still draw on a tablet, although not an ipad anymore. (I draw on a Surface Book now, which is technically more of a 2 in 1 tablet/laptop thing. so kind of a tablet kind of not.)

Can you draw with just a tablet? It depends.

If you are just using ur everyday foam or rubber tip stylus to draw on your tablet, you can draw things, sure, but you probably will not be able to do many of the things you can do with a drawing tablet.the big tips make it harder to see what you are doing, and the lack of pressure sensitivity severely limits your capabilities. pressure sensitivity is important.

If you can find a pressure sensitive stylus that is compatible with your device, then you should be more or less good to go. I think most normal tablet styluses have like 2048 degrees of pressure sensitivity, so try and find something like that. 

Some misc advice on styluses: 

There are some pressure sensitive styluses with like this weird little plastic disc on the end. dont get those. they are awkward to use and can scratch your screen. 100% not worth it. The stylus I used when I used to draw on my ipad (I think it was some kind of bamboo stylus) cost about $50, and nicer ones can cost even more, so keep in mind that it might not always be much more cost effective than a small drawing tablet. it just depends on what you can find.

Another thing to take into account is the drawing programs. I’m not terribly familiar with samsung tablets so im not sure what apps you have available, but tablet drawing apps tend to not be as good as full art programs for a laptop (I no longer have this problem because my current tablet is also a laptop, but I digress) Also, you want to make sure that those apps are compatible with your stylus as well. even if your device is compatible, if the app doesnt support your particular stylus, you will still be stuck without pressure sensitivity. The app I primarily use, Sketchbook, has a tablet version and is compatible with most stylus’s. I think Medibang also has some tablet versions, and is free and comparable to sai in functionality, but im not sure about its stylus compatibility.

on the other hand, if you choose to get a separate drawing tablet instead of a stylus for your current tablet, I’ve heard that monoprice has some cheaper tablets that are just as or nearly as good as wacom tablets, but cheaper. id take a look at those.
