On July 8, 1948, the irradiated USS NEW YORK (BB-34) was expended as a target ship near Hawaii. Two years earlier, she was used in the atomic bomb tests in the Bikini Atoll and then was towed to Pearl Harbor to study the effects of radiation. The Navy was interested in a way to decontaminating warships, in the event of any potential future wars with nukes. However, all their attempts to decontaminate her were fruitless and decided to sink her.

Later that day, she succumb to her wounds and capsized.

Lai veiksmīgāk apmācītu Latvijas bruņoto spēku karavīrus jaunā ieroča lietošanā, Latvijā bija ieradušies arī “SAAB Dynamics AB” pārstāvji.
