Named after famous photographer William Wegman's dog, Fay Ray faded into obscurity after its record label locked its second LP in the vault, refusing to release it once the group was dropped. Formed by Sheila McCartney (vocals, percussion), John Lovering (guitar), Owen Hughes (drums), Tony Travis (bass, vocals), and Jeff Taylor (wind), Fay Ray debuted in 1980 with the 7" single "Family Affairs" and three live tracks on the compilation 101 Live Letters. McCartney's voice resembled Siouxsie Sioux's, but Fay Ray had a more accessible pop sound than its post-punk peers. The group filmed two videos, "Modern Lovers" and "Heatwave," that received some airplay during MTV's early years and were revived by VH1 Classic in 2002. The band was never able to catapult itself from its small cult following to a mainstream audience. Its 1982 debut album, Contact You, was a flop. Signed to Elektra Records, Fay Ray had just finished recording its follow-up when the company pulled the plug and kept the masters. Disillusioned, the group broke up. Interest in Fay Ray was revived when the band's records were discovered in used music stores by new wave collectors and shared via mp3 format over the Internet. However, the band's entire discography remained unreleased on CD.

Endgames were formed in Glasgow by David Rudden, Paul Wishart (Guitar, Saxophone, Flute) and David Murdoch (Keyboards).

The band started to gig clubs and colleges in Glasgow - one of their first public appearances being a support act to Simple Minds in late December 1979, for which they received a rather lukewarm mention in the "New Musical Express" ("Pleasant rather disturbing, End Game [sic!] have some good, if half-formed ideas... but at least they don't sound like the Berlin Blondes"). During the second half of 1980, Endgames started playing in London area. By that time they were joined by the drummer David Wilde. Their early style is represented on several various artists compilations released during 1980–1981: Beyond the Groove and Live Letters  (both on Polydor Records), which documented bands that played in the well-known South London club 101; and Heat from the Street (on Charisma). They also attracted interest of the famous BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel and recorded their first session for his show (which was broadcast in March 1981). Recordings were done not only in London, but in Glasgow, too - for example, Endgames were the last band to do a recording session at the second home of Ca Va Studios in May 1981. During this time they played synth-rock characterised by cold-sounding synths, stiff rhythms and dark, brooding vocals reminiscent of Philip Oakey. This didn't sit well with the labels searching for the "next big thing" or the press, generally not very supportive of the "futurist"/electronic movement. Various commitments and endeavours of its members during this time (Wishart, for example, guested with Simple Minds on their "Empires and Dance Tour" in 1980 and with Skids on their 1981 tour and album Joy) also slowed down the band's progress.

Whoever posted this video again, thank you! I’ve had it from someone years ago, and from time to time I was getting back to it to watch it again. And last time was just a few days ago and I noticed it was put down... I almost wanted to cry. This is one of my favorite performances of Gillian. As funny as it sounds. Or ironic.. The woman has tons of awards for movies and tv, and I am choosing her reading a letter?  Mind you, I didn’t know how Katharine Hepburn sounds, nor I was aware of their love story at this point. I knew these two are legends, but old movies weren’t exactly my thing. But this letter hits right in the feels. But there is something scary here... I feel like she is channeling someone else, she practically becomes someone else! Now I am a fan of Gillian for over 20 years now... I have some idea about her abilities. But her roles don’t always sit well with me. Some are amazing, others just aren’t for me. But this... She is scarily good!
