FORT ERIE – The suspense is over. On Tuesday, the board of directors of the Fort Erie Live Racing Constortium, the not-for-profit organization that runs the Fort Erie Race Track, announced the picturesque border oval will indeed open for a 115th season next next May. However, next year’s meet will be two weeks shorter than this year. “Market conditions and financial constraints associated with operating thoroughbred racing in Ontario played a major part in the change in dates,” Jim Thibert, the consortium’s chief executive officer said during a an afternoon press conference. Thibert said the board has applied to the Ontario Racing Commission for 69 days of thoroughbred racing for the 2012 season. That’s down nine from the 78 racing days approved for the current meet. The track is also seeking approval for six or seven days of quarter-horse racing, which will again be held in late September and early October. CLICK ON PHOTO TO LINK TO FULL STORY.
