Great Wall Supermarket, 8815 Valley Blvd, Rosemead, CA 91770

I remember when this was another independent Chinese market called Rosemead Supermarket. GW took over in 2017 and remodeled. It looks much nicer now with new floors. While there is no in-store bakery or deli, they have a huge meat/seafood counter, live seafood, a wide variety of Asian vegetables and lots of interesting snacks. The tofu selection wasn’t great but they did have some products I’ve had a hard time finding at other Chinese markets. The produce prices were pretty good. I was impressed by how many different kinds of frozen dumplings they had.

They had mostly Chinese groceries but also Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, and Filipino. They had Lays chips from China and Thailand.

My picks:

Long bok choy, $1.29/lb

Taiwan bok choy, $0.99/lb

Lay’s chips mala bbq flavor (Thailand), $1.39

Lay’s chips salted egg flavor (Thailand), $1.49

Lay’s chips zhongzi flavor, $1.99

Egg yolk flavored rice crisps, $2.49

The market didn’t smell as much as some Asian markets. There was plenty of parking. They had a phone booth for making calls to Vietnam, I think?

Shun Fat Supermarket, 2659 Rosemead Blvd., South El Monte, CA 91733

Is it Vietnamese or is it Chinese? I always thought Thuan Phat sounded like a Vietnamese grocery store but when I walked in I saw the familiar Shun Fat sign (Shun Fat is a Chinese supermarket, I’ve been to their other location). Why does it say Thuan Phat outside and Shun Fat inside? They sound similar so maybe they mean the same thing? Mystery.

This Shun Fat is labeled the El Monte Superstore and it is ginormous. There’s a cash and carry warehouse area in the back that I didn’t visit. The rest of the store is large enough. The seafood section is gigantic and includes open tanks with live crabs. Huge.

Produce prices were fair, higher than Valu Mart I think but with a better selection of Asian vegetables. When you first walk in there are a few stalls with other businesses like DVD rentals, cell phones, Sanrio, hair accessories, clothing, jewelry, dry snacks, a snack bar (looked sketchy but he had bean filled pancakes, milk tea for $1.50, egg rolls, sugarcane juice and tea eggs. There’s a large deli/BBQ area with dim sum and BBQ.

The store looks old and dingy inside. The wine bottles were covered in dust. It smells pretty bad in there, worse than usual and I spotted flies inside. I would check expiration dates.

On a positive note, they get soy milk and tofu deliveries from several local shops and the tofu and soy milk were warm/hot. That’s fresh.
