My thoughts on the 'Who Killed Lucy Beale' reveal (heh, that rhymes)

For the last two months or so, I really believed it was Jane who had committed the murder of Lucy Beale (I'd never even considered Bobby due to the fact he was not on the 'official' suspects list). While the evidence had been mounting for numerous residents of Albert Square, only the evidence against Jane actually seemed to amount to something, with the pieces of the puzzle actually starting to join together and make a little sense. I remember telling my friends that if it turned out to be anyone other than Jane, I would be seriously annoyed at EastEnders - the Jane theory was the only one where all the evidence actually meant something.

Of course, it was Jane's adoptive son Bobby (and Lucy's younger brother) who was finally revealed as the murderer on Thursday night. Initially, I felt a little cheated by executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins - this kid had been given nowhere near the same attention as the other 'official' suspects! After some time to think though, I considered the possibility - Bobby being the killer actually made perfect sense, even more so than the Jane theory. Because really, this outcome was the Jane theory, just with more added depth. All of the clues pointing to her were still entirely valid, and even those who had sussed the events of the murder for themselves (Emma and Lauren) had initially guessed it was Jane. Also, with Jane being the only one to feel guilt for the murder (she had convinced Bobby he did not cause Lucy's death), the key to the mystery has always been her.

The clues were obvious from the get-go, but anyone with the power of hindsight would say this. I'd managed to compile a hearty list of the clues pointing to Jane in early January but there were some I couldn't work out due to their simplicity and ambiguity (for instance, Emma sussing it out after Patrick's fall, the significance of Fatboy's video, and the missing piece of Emma's file that Lauren found). These 3 were what lead the characters to point the finger at Jane, and if we, the audience had been able to work them out straight away it would have ruined the mystery a little, surely? (I'm still kicking myself at the video though. I just couldn't get it. I'd never have figured it was the damn car. And the "It wasn't there" comment. Sly).  I'm also still kicking myself at the fact they re-cast Bobby. *facepalm*

Regardless of all of this, I just really want cry at the stupidity of the situation. Because, really, if your pre-pubescent child 'accidentally' kills their sibling, you don't cover it up for them and cause them to entirely evade the seriousness of their actions - you call the police, confirm the death, and deal with the consequences (which, for a young boy, would not have been too extreme anyway. Jane and Bobby would not have been parted for long). AND HOW COULD JANE MARRY IAN WHILE KNOWING THIS ALL ALONG. I love Jane, but really? How could anyone go through with that? I think Peter is the only sane person in that house, in his disagreement to cover up the murder.

And yes, Dominic, we do need to talk about Bobby. Is he stupid? How can you deliberately whack someone over the head, cause them to go unresponsive, call over your mother who breaks down at the sight of it, and then get told "it's okay, she got up but then went outside and was killed." Come on. Really? I guess that Jane is pretty good at convincing people though, after 10 months of keeping her dark secret from the family. Let's not get distracted by creepy little Bobby though - "Can I watch TV?" he asks Jane, after being told Ian wants a little word with him. This kid never understands the severity of a situation, does he? Because he asked the same bloody question right before he was TOLD ABOUT LUCY'S DEATH. Maybe he killed Lucy because she wouldn't let him watch the damn TV.

I'll stop myself before I rattle on too much. I just want to congratulate every cast and crew member of EastEnders for this whole storyline, the live week, and well, the show in general. It was a brilliant effort at keeping the nation hooked, and let's forget those who are complaining that the 'Who Killed Lucy Beale' storyline is still not over, because I know for sure it's going to be one hell of a ride.
