Am I Not Black Enough If I Love Weave ?!?!?!
So check it: part of being a woman in general is being able to change up your style and hair however you want because, you’re a woman! Well in the Black Community there is so much criticism and encouragement for people to prove their “Blackness” sometimes, it’s crazy!
So anyway, I went to this Natural hair expo called “Relaxed Meets Natural..blah blah blah”. I personally prefer a weave. Brazilian or Peruvian hair gives me life and MOST people think it’s my hair based on how well its installed. I do not have a perm and haven’t gotten a full one since 2009. Anyway, I go in there looking for advice on how to protect my hair from breaking since I straighten it. This woman with a huge, tightly coiled ‘fro (owner of a hair product line I don’t care to mention) told me I’m ruing my hair and I’m not really natural and she’s saying it with love and I’m never going to be able to save my hair and protect from heat yahdah yadah. I guess in her mind she thinks women who wear weave and capitalize on the versatility of their hair are wrong or in bad shape. I ji resented the way she was speaking to me. I mean you coulda suggested some oil, a protein treatment (actually a very well-known celeb stylist did minutes later), SOMETHING!
All this got me to thinking though. How can we as Black Women uplift if all we do is tear down?! Like I was totally unbothered with the context of her statement, it was the fact that she thought her words were hurting me. Like, she was trying to imply I ain’t livin’ right. But we see this all the time! We down play the natural chick with the extra course texture and we hate on the one that’s light skin with long straight hair. We have so much trouble keeping no good men off our ass, protecting ourselves and children from predators, and up until recently we’ve begun worrying about steering clear of our justice system; that I just don’t see how this is even possible. I wish I was born in the days when women greeted each other with “Hello, my beautiful Sistah.” Or grew up with the men who call women “(Black) Queen” with regard and respect. Why do we have the time to still hate on each other?! You don’t know the next woman’s struggle. You don’t know what her morning routine is like! Maybe shes angry cuz her daddy left her! Maybe her mom is a drug addict! Maybe she was molested repeatedly by a close relative. Maybe her flat iron broke, or she has alopecia!
We need to be in the business of UPLIFTING other Black Women instead of tearing down. That’s the only way our culture can reunite as one full of LOVE and Harmony. Or maybe I’m seeking validation from people, instead of my Creator (Game Changerrr!!). At any rate, I got great advice from the “Hair Whisperer” and will be purchasing some protein products in the near future. *Insert hair flip*
