Day 10 - Portugalete Becoming the first transporter bridge in the world built of metal, the Vizcaya Bridge (Bizkaiko Zubia in Basque, Puente de Vizcaya in Spanish) was inaugurated on 28 July 1893. It is a structure made up of four iron towers 61 metres high, linked by a cross beam 160 feet in length, located 45 metres above the sea. It was the first bridge in the world to carry people and traffic on a high suspended gondola and was used as a model for many similar bridges in Europe, Africa and the America only a few of which survive. It was painted in 'Somorrostro Vein Red', a tone that recalls the mining past of the area. Merges 19th-century ironworking traditions with the new lightweight technology, the bridge was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2006. It is located between the towns of Portugalete and Las Arenas in the Biscay province of Spain (30mins by train from Bilbao), crossing the mouth of the Nervion River. #LivelikeDarren #LivelikeDC #Darrenstagram #DCTravelling #Worldtravelling #TravelinEurope #igers #igersaustria #igersvienna #Summertrip2016 #20160707 #Day10 #VizcayaBridge #BizkaikoZubia #PuentedeVizcaya #Portugalete #LasArenas #Bilbao #Biscay #Basque #Basquecountry #Spain #🇪🇸 (at Bizkaiko Zubia)
