30 Student Hacks to Save Money
College can get expensive. Especially when you’re staying away from home, with tuition, food, housing and all the other unexpected costs your pocket money can easily show an early countdown.
We all have been there and it always helps to have few hacks up your sleeve to save some extra buck for the end of the month. Here’s how:
1. Buy/Rent second-hand textbooks. It can help you a big time to spare some time tallying your current syllabus with the old books’ syllabus, and if most of it is still available in the older version of the books, guess what, you’re lucky to be able to save yourself an extra buck! Find out the book shops which have an option to lend/buy older books.
2. Borrow from the library. This won’t be difficult if you’re the studious kinds. Also, anything is possible if you focus on the result! (in this case: you save your entire text book’s money)
3. Find an e-book: We all Google stuff & love to download those torrents/PDF’s online. Why not for your academic books too?
4. Coupon. Cash backs. Student Discounts. When it comes to buying your everyday needs, watch out for those “xyz% Off” Discounts. Every 10 Rs. The difference will really add up!
5. Help with homework for a buck/meal. Why not? When you’re good at something, never do it for free. This way your Seniors/friends might just value your help more.
6. Don’t miss out your mess meals. Instead of eating out most of the times, eat your meals at your regular mess. After all your parents already paid for it! Why not save their hard earned money and help yourself some health and money.
7. Have a no-spend day once a week.
8. Ditch expensive gym memberships. Just set aside sometime each day to get some exercise, and your body and wallet will thank you.
9. Cook at home. If you’re someone who stays in a PG along with your mates, cook at home.
10. Know your meal plans. Planning your meal in a way that you healthy and right amount will really make you conscious of not overspending, viz. on binge eating. And guess what? It’ll leave you in good health and shape.
11. Keep track of your spending. Maybe you can download an app for the same.
12. Don’t overpay for transport
13. Watch application dates. You don’t want to pay your savings on filling the late-application fine, do you?
14. Apply for scholarships.
15. Enter contests. You might just win a fancy amount of Amazon/Online Shopping Voucher.
16. Put Money in the Bank. The quarterly interests on your savings account would just be an added benefit in your kitty.
17. Write a list before you go shopping and stick to it.
18. Invite friends over instead of going out. Going out to eat or on a getaway trip can drastically imbalance your budget. While it can be really fun to invite your friends over and have a meal at home, watch movies and create your own entertainment together. Check out a pocket-friendly hangout – Coffeeville
19. Quit Smoking. If you’re still a smoker, you have to know by now that your habit is not only expensive but potentially deadly as well. If you want to add years to your life and save a boatload of money, the easiest thing to do is to stop smoking altogether. You can quit cold turkey, try some of the many anti-smoking products that are out there, or switch to an electronic cigarette to buy some time. Whichever path you choose, you will be much better off.
20. Turn off the lights. Keeping the lights on in your home may not be expensive on a per-watt basis, but it sure does cost money over time.
21. Swap books, music, and DVDs with friends or at the library.
22. Install CFLs or LEDs wherever it makes sense.
23. Eat Breakfast. Eating a healthy breakfast fills you up with energy for the day while also curbing your desire for a big, expensive lunch.
24. Brown Bag your lunch. Instead of going out to eat at work, take your own lunch — if not every day, then at least a couple of times a week. Henceforth, save yourself a fistful of cash each time you do so.
25. Learn how to dress minimally. Buy clothes that mix and match well so you won’t need as many clothes but instead the endless number of combinations to go together already.
26. ‘Look for a one-stop destination for all your needs’ kind of a place. It’ll help you not just save your energy, time but also money. After all, as the wise ones said - Time is money!
27. Cut your own hair. This may not be a popular idea, but it works if you have a simple hairstyle. I cut my own hair with a pair of clippers, for example. Just put a garbage bag over the bathroom sink, bust out the clippers and scissors, and get it done. Two or three cuts will pay for the Clippers, and then you’re basically getting free haircuts. With a bit of practice, you can make it look good, too.
28. Carpool or use a shuttle service provided.
29. Eat less meat. Meat is very expensive when you consider its nutritional value, especially as compared to vegetables and fruits. And in almost every case, protein-packed staples like beans offer a much better value. Even if you don’t want to become a full-fledged vegetarian, you can still save a bundle just by eating meat less often.
30. Don’t Buy a Calculator; Download an App. Need a scientific calculator? Have a Smartphone? Just download one of the so many apps available and you’re good to go!
While these are some good to follow hacks, which don’t have to follow all at once but can mix and match as per your requirements and call for a situation, make sure you’re wary of what’s the good expenditures v/s savings balance for
