Windows – VII Tilburg

Stefanie: “It is Dibbets’ approach to photography that continues to fascinate me. An established and internationally acclaimed artist, Jan Dibbets (born 1941) is known for his photography series like ‘Cupolas’, ‘Colour Studies’ and ‘Windows’. In this work, bright daylight from outside is juxtaposed with an interior devoid of light. This striking contrast is connected (or arguably broken) by the only gradient light quality that the image contains. It is this soft and subtle, almost golden, light resting in the circular window ledge that gives the image a somewhat transcendental sense. This is strengthened by the low viewpoint as well as the angle that the artist chose, whilst the brickwork brings the work back to the now. The interplay between the geometric forms and lines – i.e. the circular profile of the window and the grid formed by the delicate glazing beads and wall behind, though equally the square shape of the work itself – keeps me drawn into this picture”.
About the artist: Dutch artist Jan Dibbets (1941) is one of the most distinguished and influential figures in the international art world. Dibbets’ work explores questions relating to light, the mechanisms of perception, perspective and space.
