Continuation of this AU under the cut because this completely escalated ⇊

Now Dan has been living in the new world for some time, maybe half a year give or take and he's getting used to it. He's still grieving his old life and world, still missing modern conveniences, but Dan is nothing but adaptable, he can deal. It helps that he’s feeling better with every passing day, yes, he’s still a mental nutcase and yes, the first few months of caffeine withdrawals were hell, but hey! His bones stopped hurting and he can read in low light again, small win! Dan takes any advantage he can get in this backwater hole that has never heard of ibuprofen before, which, is honestly just plain depressing.

Little does Dan know that his improved physical health isn’t to blame on the fresh air and reduced work load. No, sire. We live in fantasy bullshit land now and apparently there are consequences to people believing you are a fallen God even when they are hilariously off the mark. It started with as a joke between the village children. They were throwing around different theories about who exactly this mysterious grumpy man from the forest is and out of all of them the ex-Forest God theory got stuck because it was the funniest. But with time they came to realize: this guy? Is super strange. He can carry an entire pig just by himself (Dan boosted himself with Cloud Flames)! His eyes glow purple when you sneak up on him (again Cloud Flames)! He knew how to cure Auntie Elma even though every doctor wrote her off as a lost cause (Dan has encyclopedic knowledge of medicinal plants and a decent grasp of biology). So, the kids gathered more and more evidence that the weird guy in the woods might actually be a fallen God and they should pay respects to him just in case (it’s never wise to disrespect a God, every kid knows that). After some time the adults caught on to the shrine and offerings and at first they were skeptical. Surely they would know if a divine being would walk among them? But the kids can be extremely convincing. They have lists! And eyewitnesses, and… what do you call it? Ah, yes! Hard evidence! They have it all right here, just have a look!

Cue: adults joining the ever growing cult of the fallen Forest God.

Naturally Dan is completely oblivious to what is happening behind the scenes, because back home everyone wanted to feed him too and being respected for a change is quite nice, isn’t it? So, he takes the offerings (mostly food, animals and seeds) and lives his best farmer life.

Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be a Chief story if someone doesn’t enter stage left to completely fuck him over and in this case it’s royalty not being able to mind their own fucking business. For there are rumors whispered in taverns and brothels, about a small village at the edge of the kingdom that has seen a sudden boom of development and fortune and isn’t it quite strange? There’s nothing special about this place, neither the land nor the people, how come they have new inventions and strange remedies? Something must be afoot!

So, the his Imperial Highness the Crown Prince (because of course there’s a crown prince who do you take me for? A coward?) sends an envoy to the village and oh boy. Isn’t that a poke in the wasps nest! The villagers are honored but suspicious. They like their new guardian deity! They don’t want to share him, especially not with some stuck up nobles who couldn’t care less about humbly country bumpkins like them. They keep quiet about Dan, claim their shiny new plumbing and herb garden to be “blessings of the Gods, oh we were so lucky to have been chosen~” (Hah!) and try to shove the royal envoy out of their village as fast as possible without arising suspicion. Alas, Dan enters on the village on a supply run. (“Dammit laddie, why do ya always have the most terrible timin’?” “… Whut???”). The royal representative squints at the newcomer and starts asking question that nobody really wants to answer, because even covered in dirt and with messed up hair Dan has a certain… air about him. The villagers still keep quiet, because they aren’t snitches, no sire! Just honest village folk here. Who’s this? Oh, just a wanderer from the south, he got injured a while back on a hike and decided to stay here to recover. Quite common really. You would think people know how to read a map properly these days, but no, we still get some lost souls, here and then.

The royal representative isn’t buying it but realizes he’s hitting a roadblock and decides to return back to the palace to report. The prince is intrigued by the news and curious about the mysterious stranger. He’s also bored beyond belief by his duties and decides a field trip would be the best options to solve both problems.

“Guards! Pack my things! We are visiting Village Nowhere in Nowheresville. Be sure to bring snacks!”

“Wh-what? My liege what about your meeting with the Duchess?”

The prince ignores the spluttering of his underlings – as is his royal right – and takes off on his journey. Meanwhile, Dan feels a sudden shiver running down his spine, thinking he will catch his first cold in the foreign land, but that’s not related at all to a curious Prince who doesn’t know when to leave things well enough alone. Nope, not connected at all~

The villagers are less than amused when the fucking Crown Prince shows up but they still perform the appropriate amount of ass kissing since they don’t want to be beheaded in the town’s square for being insolent.

The prince is fascinated by this behavior since he’s genuinely well liked by his people, so his curiosity burns even brighter. What makes them so different? What is going on here?

Cue: Dan entering the scene stage right, because it was time for his standing appointment with the village chief.

Needless to say, Chief ain’t impressed with the shiny Prince who stares at him with an unfaltering smile, wearing way too much gold to be anything but gaudy.

The Prince immediately clocks Dan as a “person of interest” and refuses to leave him alone for the entire time of his visit. Dan has strange flashbacks to Dave not being able to mind his own business and it makes his heart hurt in the worst ways, so he snaps at the Prince more often than not.

The Prince might actually be a secret masochist because that just makes him want to bug Dan even more and honestly everyone is surprised that he doesn’t get murdered for it. (Dan has had a lot of practice in ignoring annoying people, the Prince needs to try harder than that.)

However, as much as the Prince just wants to unwrap the mystery that is grumpy forest guy from Nowheresville, he’s still supposed to rule a nation, so needs to head back to the palace at some point.

Alas, don’t fear, for he will be back! Don’t miss him too much~

Dan turns to the village chief. “Is it too late to fake my death, yet?”

“Ey laddie, I fear he won’t be slowed down by that.”

“Fuck.”

tom’s question was cut short as he noticed you laying on the floor of your bedroom, the space illuminated only by the few candles you had lit on the dresser. you looked almost peaceful; eyes closed, hands under your head like a pillow, and your lips pulled into the slightest, content smile.

“why are you laying on the floor, love? what’s wrong?” he started again, this time moving closer but you shushed him.

“i’m okay. just feels nice and... you know i love listening to the rain.”

he smiled, somehow falling even more in love with you and the way you were now looking at him. every time he thought that was it. he couldn’t possibly... you proved him wrong but he didn’t mind. tom loved falling in love with you and the little things you always did that made his heart race and his chest fill with warmth.

you were reaching for him now, smiling so beautifully, he’d forgotten why he went in there in the first place. his phone didn’t need to charge anyway.

“how do you do it?” tom watched you skeptically as he lied down beside you, pulling you closer so your head could rest comfortably on his chest.

you hummed and waited for him to continue—

“how do you always manage to look so beautiful, without even trying...?”

that made you laugh and bury your face in the crook of his neck, feeling the flush of your cheeks against his skin before you started leaving kisses across his chest.

“hmm, i think you’re a little biased though, tommy.” he shook his head as he rolled his eyes and pulled your leg over his waist so you were now on top of him.

you’d had on one of his hoodies — which was far too big and that’s why you liked it. you could wear it as a dress and tom wouldn’t know that it was the only thing you had on until he found out for himself.

“fucking hell, are you trying to kill me, love?” he groaned as he felt your wetness against his bulge, soaking his sweatpants in the process.

“of course not... just really glad you lost whatever you were looking for,” you smirked, leaning down to kiss the sweet spot below his ear as his hands worked to push the hoodie up to reveal your bare chest.

tom sat up, taking it off the rest of the way only to wind his arms around your waist and flip the two of you over so you were laying on the floor again. he kissed you deeply, getting comfortable between your legs after taking his sweats off — not without a little struggle.

“you could have just asked, doll.” he smiled sweetly, lightly kissing the tip of your nose as he pushed himself into you.

“mmm, where’s the fun in that?”

OCtober 2025 day 8: Personality

His patient’s face contorted into a grimace of pain and misery, his mouth opened to curse but his protests where silenced by the hand covering it. Sweat rolled down his temple and panic shone through dilated pupils.

It was all quite pathetic really.

Ryota had only stabbed him in the hand after all.

Yes, the scalpel was stuck right inside a nerve cluster but surely an active duty Shinigami would have a better pain tolerance than this? Did they let anyone graduate the Academy these days?

Well, it played into Ryota’s hands in this case, so he shouldn’t complain. More pain meant more fear and fear made people deliciously pliant.

Ryota tilted his head and quirked his lips into a tight-lipped, cheek scrunching smile. Kaito once assured Ryota that it made him look “cute like a button” but considering the fact that his friend found Hirako Shinji of all people attractive, Ryota was confident this translated to “creepily deranged” for normal people’s standards.

Which worked perfectly for the occasion.

“Did you know,” Ryota mused, his tone not betraying a hint of the fury bubbling in his veins, “that there are 27 bones in a human hand? Quite a marvellous work of biological engineering, isn’t it? Bones and nerves interwoven in a complicated tapestry which can be so easily,” a small ping against the scalpel which was followed by a muffled whimper, “destroyed.”

Contrary to common belief Ryota did not enjoy causing pain. More than one person called him a sadistic bastard but in his opinion that was a bit of a misnomer.

Ryota was – above all else – dedicated to fixing things. Things or people. Same difference really. You find a problem, you search for a solution. You apply said solution to your problem and then record the effects, be it success or failure. Rinse and repeat.

Ryota might have a slightly controversial approach to problem solving but his results speak for themselves. It wasn’t his fault that fixing stupidity took something stronger than kind words and a listening ear. Shinigami were a resilient bunch after all. Such stubbornness demanded some more elbow grease and Ryota had never been afraid of hard work.

Which meant: No, he wasn’t sadistic. He was just walking that extra mile and doing Soul Society a favour by cleaning up the trash. Pain was only a side effect in this line of work.

Pain and bodily fluids, judging from the tears leaking out of his patient’s eyes.

No matter, some salt water was nothing compared to guts and brain matter.

However, it would be best to cut it short before someone interrupted them.

Ryota reached out with his left hand, removed the scalpel and with a quick brush of Kaido he healed the unassuming wound. His patient didn’t seem inclined to screaming any longer, so Ryota removed his other hand from the mouth as well.

Gently he cradled up the other man’s hand, no evidence of harm left behind. He held it up to his lips – just a breath away from a lover’s touch – before he gazed at his patient through his lowered eyelashes.

“Hands are so delicate, Shinigami-san. They take an expert’s touch to heal, many upon many hours of practice and focus. One wrong move and your patient’s mobility can be shot for life.”

Ryota inched closer, his breath ghosting over the pale man’s face.

“One wrong move and these hands may never be able to hold a sword again.”

Ryota could practically taste the terror edged into his patient’s body. The acidic odour of fear crept into the room and Ryota wanted to scope it up for future use.

“Now Shinigami-san,” he continued like this was just a normal chat between colleagues, “I’m something called an overachiever. I hate stagnation and I always seek improvement. And there is no lack of injuries in our Division but if I ever catch a hint about your unwanted advances again, then you will find yourself on the volunteer list for experimental treatment. And Shinigami-san?” Ryota reached out to softly trace the tear tracks on his patient’s cheek with his fingertip.

“I will make it painful.”

OCtober 2025 day 7: Home

Dave regards the room and its occupants from his place in the doorway, taking a small break from the hustle and bustle that forms the Varia game night. A strange serenity befalls his mind, the squirrel on crack responsible for his thought process staying silent for once.

Dave never really understood the concept of home. A place where you feel safe, somewhere you belong to, filled with people that welcome you with open arms.

In the dark times of his childhood and teenage years home had been a myth, a distant wish upon the stars that remain unfulfilled.

Home belonged to other people.

To the unbroken and wanted.

To the deserving and cherished.

But never to Dave.

“Hey Menace! How long are you going to dawdle, huh? Where is my fucking drink?”

Startled, Dave blinks at a frowning Chief, the squirrel back on track after a moment of rebooting. With a bright smile – not at all forced for once – Dave delivers the whiskey to his boss with the flourish of an experienced waiter.

“Here you go Chief! Your poison of choice, just how you like it.”

“About fucking time,” Chief mutters, gaze still focused on his cards while slowly sipping on his drink.

Dave leans against the back of Chief’s chair, taking advantage of his tipsiness and lightened boundaries. Drunk Chief could be surprisingly clingy sometimes and it delights Dave to no end.

“You know,” Dave comments idly, “for someone with a strict anti-gambling stance you are awful good at poker, Chief.”

The other man snorts and with one last look at his cards, he puts them upside down on the table.

“I advice against gambling because you twats all fucking suck at it and then come crying to me once you’re broke. I – on the other hand – know what I’m fucking doing.”

With those words he pushes the huge stack of chips into the middle of the table. “All in.”

Filled with nothing short of adoration Dave watches as Chief wipes the floor with every other player on the table in a matter of seconds.

He nearly swoons.

Chief is so fucking cool.

Only after his boss left behind a pouting Austin, a crying René and a smirking Vlasta does Dave register Chief’s previous words properly.

“Hey! What about me? I haven’t lost a bet yet.”

Chief lifts an eyebrow at him, his flushed cheeks and smirk betraying his amusement. “Well, there’s a reason I keep you around after all.”

Dave frowns. “You keep me around because I’m good at gambling?”

“No, I keep you around because you are the only person who can make a decent curry around here. Keep the fuck up, Menace.”

Dave stares at Chief’s back, mouth parted for a snarky comeback that the squirrel hasn’t provided yet.

Well.

He might have found a home after all.

OCtober 2024 day 1: fav OC

To no ones surprise my favourite is my main guy Daniele Costa aka Chief because let's be real here I can talk about him for ages. I love Dave to bits but Chief was my first proper OC for a fanfic and I'm most familiar with him. He accompanied me through tough times (aka thesis hell) and through him I was able to meet you guys! And I love you all to bits! So Chief is my dude! My tired bean that is in desperate need of a vacation and a nap (I think he might also be my fav because I relate to him so much lmao).

I made the drawing but I've also written a snippet where I used @zoroara's OCtober prompt day 1: foamy as a writing prompt (just so people are aware: I'm sticking to the #bweirdoctober prompts for this year but I had this snippet pre-written for ages and I don't wanna just let it let it rot in my documents. So I hope it's alright that I add this here 👉👈)

The washroom looked like a bomb exploded in it. Foam everywhere, floor just one big puddle of water, one wall absolutely riddled with suspicious cracks and the washing machine was smoking like chimney in a frosty winter. At this point Dan feared stepping into the room just in case the ceiling would fall on his head.

He pinched his nose, once again regretting well … every single choice that brought him to this moment.

“Why?”

His question resembled more of a plea for divine intervention than an actual inquiry.

Why indeed.

Why is he awake at - he checked his watch - way-too-fucking-early o’clock? Why is he dealing with this? Why did he ever decide to work for the Varia? Once again, why is he awake right now?

“Ummm…”

He turned to his subordinates who had grouped themselves together in a trembling pile, which probably functioned as some form of moral support.

Dan narrowed his eyes at the pile not bothering to find out who actually spoke up.

“Well,” he said, tapping his foot. “Why am I here?”

A panicked and telepathic exchange of looks followed to determine which poor schmuck would need to answer his question. In the end Sam - four months, cleaning crew, allergic against bees - was shoved to the front like a sacrificial lamb. She was certainly shaking like one.

Honestly, it’s not like he will eat them. Unlike Vlasta he had standards for what entered his mouth.

Dan raised his eyebrow at the woman who clearly wished for the ground to swallow her whole.

“I am waiting.”

Her eyes skittered around the room steadily avoiding his gaze until they eventually focus on the broken washing machine. Resigned, she slumped into herself.

“The washing machine blew up.”

“Clearly,” Dan said, his tone the only dry thing in the entire room. “This doesn’t answer my question.” He stepped closer to his subordinate, placed a finger under her chin and lifted her face until she was caught directly in his piercing stare.

“Tell me, Sam, why has Varia’s Chief of Staff been dragged out of bed to deal with one. Singular. Destroyed. Room?”

To her credit Sam did neither break eye contact nor did she start crying. However, her skin took a rather ashen parlour and if she bit her lip any harder there would be blood dropping down her chin.

“I- we- ummm…” she stuttered, trying to come up with some excuse that would save this situation.

Dan simply waited. And waited. And waited some more. In the end the silence dragged on for too long and Sam looked one second away from a panic attack, so he came to the conclusion that his last lecture of being kept in the loop had backfired on him. Apparently, his employees took the subject matter so much to heart and are now running to him in a panic for the most trivial of matters.

Time to correct that misconception.

He let go of Sam and addressed the hoard in its entirety.

“I was told it was emergency. Do you know what I qualify as an emergency?” He didn’t give them an opportunity to answer and started counting off incidents on his fingers. “Any of the assassin's going on a rampage. The castle actively burning down. PoisonChem messing with the water supply again. Or God forbid, my coffee supply mysteriously vanishing. You know what isn’t included on that list? Property destruction so minor it doesn't even make a dent into our repair budget.”

He crossed his arms, his whole being screaming displeasure and disappointed in all of their decision making skills. “Now, you are going to clean up this mess.” One of the newbies in the hoard furrowed his eyebrows, rebellion clear on his face.

Well, we can’t have that.

Dan clicked his tongue. “I will hear no argument. Apparently you weren’t able to deal with this yourself, since you deemed my presence a necessity. Well, here I am, giving you the orders you needed. Sort this out, get the Reps for the wall and ask Logistics if they have a spare washing machine on hand.” His words were met with frozen bodies and blank stares. “Did I fucking stutter? Move it!”

What followed could only be described as productive chaos which was an accurate summary of day to day happenings of Varia Housekeeping. It involved a lot of swearing, whacking people with brooms and the occasional breakdown about the horror of the week. How any cleaning gets done in this process was a mystery to Dan, but he will not argue with the results (unless the results are sloppy in which case he will make arrangements).

He turned to leave, fully intending to crawl under his blanket again. But before fully exiting the room, he looked back once more.

“And Sam?”

“Y-yes?”

“I want a full report on the culprits of this mess. Have it on my desk on Tuesday.”

“Tuesday!” she squeaked. “But Chief, it’s Monday!”

His smile was neither kind nor particularly nice. “Better hurry then.”
