Process 3 Final Process

Let’s look at some improvements of oven as my project 3 final process.

In this video, we can see that the self-cleaning oven is actually exist. But it uses different cleaning method as I expect. In this self-cleaning oven, extreme high temperature is used for burning off all the remains inside the oven. All you need to do is just wipe down the burn offs, and the oven is cleaned. But I am just curious that isn’t it more dangerous than we expected. Extremely high temperature requires very very safe on oven’s materials and structure. On the one hand, we would cost more to buy this kind of oven because of its high-tech materials. On the other hand, this kind of oven would cost more electricity energy. Anyways, I believe it’s actually a very good design that I can learn from. This kind of oven doesn’t change much to achieve the goal of self-cleaning. All it does is just change the material to a more stable one which can beat heat.

Also, the mini size oven is already existed. I believe this kind of oven can save more energy and cheaper than the big one. Also, the inside is very well designed which we can put enough food inside for cooking.

All I want to show in this final process is that, design is for making people live better, and provide them more convenient tools to improve life experience. The best design is the next design.

Project 3 process 2

The process 2 I want to focus on the brainstorm of this project. 

Firstly, the problem or the inconvenience of the oven should be clarified. I found that the most inconvenient parts of the oven is the cleaning method which I explain in my previous project. Then, it’s just need to wait so long until the oven is fully heated. And comparing to the refrigerator, oven uses more power than other family appliances, also it’s size is really huge. 

Then I consider the functions of the oven and try to make some improvement without influencing its functions. All the functions I have listed above and found that I can work on the materials used for heating and try to make the improvement. I know that the heat capacity is used to measure the speed of changing temperature, then I can find some material that can rapidly decrease or increase its self temperature. As we all known that, slow heating time saves more energy. Also, I am think to control its size or maybe make a better organization inside the oven.

Project 3 Process 1

Before talking about my project 3, I want to talk about my project 1 a little bit. My project 1′s concept is mainly about the improvement of oven in its cleaning system. I want to install a cleaning system similar to the dish washer that it can automatically clean the oven. I think many of you have known that cleaning an oven is kind of a complex and troublesome work. First, you have to remove all the racks and wash it. As all the racks have been removed, you need to make a soda baking paste or something with vinegar. The acid material inside them can help remove the remaining inside the oven. Then you can clean the oven with that paste.

If the auto-cleaning system can really put inside the oven, I think there should be many improvements that can be applied into the oven. That’s why I start my project 3. The basic concept of my project 3 is to find as many improvements as possible that can apply to the oven.

Final Week Reflection

As for my final reflection for this class, I am surprised all the work classmates have done and all the creative ideas created. Project 3 presentation was wonderful and each group showed very useful and functional project presentation. I really want to see what will go on next and how can those designs actually improve our life experiences. I am happy taking this class, it’s fun and not hard as all, and I can also learn many things about design. Although designing is one of the coolest thing in the world in my mind, I found that it’s not an easy thing. Creating your own designing idea, making prototypes and spending tons of time working for improvement, those steps are the path for designers.

Weekly Reflection

Last week’s project 2 presentation was amazing and I absorbed many good ideas for all the hard work we did and all the creative ideas we had.

As for this week, I think the main difference between empathetic design and professional design is the starting point. As for many professional designers, their job is to creative things, that they are somehow limited by the outside environment such as marketing, users and public’s aesthetic value. I think those elements really limited designer, but if they get over all the limits, their product would be legendary. 

On the other hand, as for the empathetic designers, they create what they loved and what they want. In this creating method without any limits, their product tends to serve for only a small group of people or only for themselves.

Weekly Reflection

This reflection is a little bit late but I really want to share what I and my team have done last week. Last week is the week before project 2 final due, our team came out with many creative thoughts and modifications about our project. We worked together to figure out every steps of our project 2 to make the final slides in today presentation. 

As for today’s presentation, I think we did a great job. The organization of the project is strong and the topic showed to class is interesting.

Project 1 Final Process

  From my pervious post of the project 1, I have completed describing my project 1 and the method about cleaning the oven. As for my final process, I want to talk about the brainstorm and also some future solution about my project. 

Simple Introduction:

  My project idea is the auto cleaning system inside the oven. We may experienced that the oven gets dirty easily and the interior surfaces are covered by oil after using it for times. For approaching this situation, I am think about adding an auto cleaning system inside the oven that can easily clean everything inside the oven, like a washing machine. 

Brainstorm:

  The most common difficulties we faced of designing is that we might focus more on the further solution rather than completely and firstly understand the problem itself. Here is the lists of the brainstorm:

  1. The oven in my dorm is extremely dirty

  2. I cleaned this by following the online instruction, and it takes me about two hours cleaning

  3. As for the dishes washer, all I need to do is to place the dirty dishes inside and click the "Open" button

  4. Why can't we just simply create a cleaning system inside the oven that is similar with the cleaning system inside the washer

Difficulties and challenges:

  1. The auto cleaning system inside the oven can work fine under a overheating condition

  2. There should be an output attachment inside the oven than allow dirty water to come out 

  3. The price of this kind of oven should not be too high and approaching the price of regular oven, maybe a little bit higher

Other Options:

  I also found other kinds of self-cleaning oven from Google. One kind of existing self-cleaning oven is applying the heat to clean the leftovers inside the oven. What it does is to burn off the leftovers with extremely high temperature, nearly 900 degree Fahrenheit to burn off the leftovers. This cleaning method is interesting. For this kind of oven, it doesn't apply anything new to the oven, using the heating system to clean the oven. 

  But there are also some shortcoming of this oven. Firstly, the leftovers can't be completely cleaned by using the heat. And also, it's too frightening for keeping a 900 degree oven inside the house and everything inside the oven is burning!

Weekly Reflection

  What I am thinking this week is the passion of a designer. Generally, there are many things unreasonable and inconvenient in our daily life that we need a designer to solve these problems. But what if the problem he is about to solve is not what he really interested in, then he might loses his interest in designing and makes somethings bad. As for me, I am very familiar with this. I hate math, every time I solve math problem, I am feeling boring and losing all interests in doing the problems. Therefore, I believe all those great designs must be created by a designer who is very interested in and be passion about the design.
