Set of stickers from U.S. label Matador Records promoting Liz Phair’s 1993 album Exile in Guyville.

All this week on the blog I’ll be featuring that most shareable of promo items: stickers. And since I was never much one for permanently mucking up a hard surface with something gluey, I’ve accumulated a good stack of unstuck (though not pristine) music-related stickers.

These particular ones came with a Matador store order in 1993, including copies of Liz Phair’s debut album. While the album's subject matter and cover art all scream “cool rocker chick,” the visual style of these stickers is decidedly different. With simple, bold colors and line art of a dashing gent or lady, these artifacts look a bit out of place in Guyville. But I think they’re swell.

This was much maligned when it came out mostly due to having some songs produced by Avril Lavigne's team. But I liked it back then and I still do now. Plus it has one of my favorite songs of hers on it. Liz Phair - Girly-Sound to Guyville (2018, 7LP Box Set)........Just to remind you I was never a big fan of ‘Exile in Guyville’. Always thought the album was way too overrated. It took many years and listens to finally understand that album and begin to really enjoy it. So it took many years to finally listen to her other works such as Whip-Smart which I immensely enjoy. When this box set was announced I had that curious perk not for the remastered sound of Exile in Guyville but for her earlier never released bedroom materials prior to her debut. Three original cassette tapes of her earlier material is included in this set all restored and mastered for vinyl version. If they had a separate set just with these bedroom tapes I probably would’ve gotten that minus the Exile but of course the label wouldn’t think of that and drop the price. So I settled for this set and not regretting at all. The mastered album sounds great and the set is well worth the money. I haven’t gone through all five LPs of her bedroom tapes yet but I have a feeling I’m going to enjoy it immensely! #lizphair #exileinguyville #girlysoundtoguyville #25thanniversary #indierock #boxset
