Knights theme means I can finally talk about my fairybark headcanon.
Ren is Queen Lizzie's most loyal knight. Some claim he is more like her personal bodyguard than just a simple knight. They are often seen together and Ren can get a little on-edge if he thinks someone is threatening her. Of course, the queen and her loyal knight is the talk of the town from nobles to the common folks. Especially when they get noticed together during a ball, talking a little too closely on a balcony.
People worry that the King is ignorant of their affair, but it's far from it. In fact, Joel was supportive of Lizzie's affection for her 'knight in shining armor' as he teasingly put it before either one could properly admit it to themselves let alone each other. He's happy she has someone who cares for her and wants to protect her besides him. And he makes sure to let Ren know that if he doesn't, there will be hell to pay. After all if anyone tries to slander the queen about her "affair", well plenty of people have been put in the dungeon for it.
Lizzie feels so loved between her husband and her knight, always making sure to give him her personal favor before any competition. He looks so cute after all with his tag wagging, always saying that getting to see her and get a secret kiss for good luck is all the luck he needs to win.
And he wins constantly. For his Lady.
Joel was wary of Ren at first, of course he was! He supplied plenty of threats of his own. But, it doesn't take much time around the guy to realise he'd do anything Lizzie asked of him. Guy's got more dedication than Joel, and he's already down bad.
Sometimes the three will walk together in the evenings, and Ren gets to drop the attitude of a knight just a little. Still alert - always alert - but for a while they can enjoy the quiet and each other's company.
