Ch66, Major Lizzipps vibes

I don’t usually promote ships that haven’t been made canon (besides Undertaker x Cloudia/Claudia), but I do make the occasional exceptions for three other pairings: Bard and Mey-Rin, Edward and Paula, and Lizzie (once she’s older) and Charles Phipps.

Lizzie and Phipps have some things in common:

Highly talented at pretty much whatever they do

Respectful of their titles/duties

Appreciate “cute” things

Then there’s this general trend (or stereotype) for a woman to end up with someone much like her own father. A similar trend/stereotype exists for men ending up with women like their mothers.

Ch66 gives us these glimpses of how well Lizzie and Phipps get along and have shared interests. Also how they are a bit nervous or shy interacting with each other.

Notice it’s Lizzie’s father who decorated these eggs. He’s the sort of person with a stern exterior, but he’s a softy.

But Lizzie has also made one (first time she ever has, despite what she says to “Ciel”). She repeatedly emphasizes when she thinks things are “cute”.

Then Double Charles shows up, and Phipps is the one who decorated these eggs (on the queen’s behalf). Just like Lizzie’s dad, Phipps is the sort who acts stern but has a definite soft side. [He looked like he was going to attack Finny in an earlier chapter, but he sewed a flower patch onto Finny’s hat. He’s the one who does all sorts of baking at the castle, and he’s also now canonically the one who added the lace decorations to Grey’s uniform.] When Lizzie and Phipps see the eggs the other brought, they stand around in the background and… just politely complement each other.

And when Double Charles’s egg hatches, Phipps blushes while saying “It’s cute”.

We know he ended up keeping that chicken, and he lets the hen sit on his head and shoulders from time to time. He even brings her with him to the cricket tournament at Weston.

Personally, I see ch66 not only as a parallel to the search for the Egg of Light (or Hummingbird Egg) in Mother3… but also foreshadowing that Lizzie and Phipps might eventually get together.

I got blocked by another person who apparently can’t handle Lizzie eventually growing up and choosing her own husband.

Their loss. That future ship with Phipps is golden.

First off, which Ciel?

The real Ciel is betrothed to her, but I don’t think he ever would have seen her as much more than property and a weapon. Now, that’s definitely all he treats her as. And he’s technically a walking and talking corpse, so I don’t see marriage and kids in their future.

Our earl, “Ciel”, appreciates her skills, but I don’t think he actually wants to be with her. He might have once wished to, but she was his brother’s fiancée, and after making the demon contract, he has no expectations of living long enough to marry anyone. It was an obligation to be her fiancé, since he was pretending to be his brother, and it felt like a burden. He will protect her, and he might even love her, but they probably aren’t meant to end up together, even if she comes around to see what’s really going on with our earl and the reasons for his deception. Not even if they both live.

Let bizarre doll real Ciel be destroyed. Let the demon get his main course from our earl. Let Lizzie live to adulthood and find love elsewhere... on her own terms. (🤞Lizzipps🤞)

I was definitely talking about the girls having an age appropriate relationship since they don't seem to be around other girls their age much and they could definitely build a solid friendship and find comfort in each other .

I'm sorry but Phips is a grown adult already working for the queen while Lizzy is still underage right ? I feel like the gap in their maturity and life experience level is still pretty big for them to relate to each other , no ? They seem to approach life very differentoy and seem to be polar opposites ? Has The double charles ages ever been disclosed too ?

I’m glad you meant something age appropriate for them and for it to be about friendship and comfort.

I believe Charles Grey is 24, while Phipps is canonically younger than that, but I don’t know how much younger. I realize that when Lizzie is 18, Phipps will also have aged another four years. But I don’t think that’s a huge gap.

Vincent was several years older than Rachel. Yana-san says he was so self-conscious about the age difference that he did whatever he could to look younger than he was. She must have been about 18 when they married. He died at the age of 34, when the twins turned 10, so he was probably about 24 when he married. That’s an age difference of six years.

If Phipps were 24 now, he’d be 28 when Lizzie is 18 — a difference of 10 years — but he’s younger than that. If he’s 20, then he’s no older than Lizzie... than Vincent was older than Rachel.

Also, keep in mind that it was very common during the Victorian era for older men to marry younger women.

The biggest age gap we have seen in the manga — that’s known to be canon, so far — is Irene Diaz and Grimsby Keane. She’s 12 years his senior, and he apparently didn’t know. Last we saw, she’s dating someone new (Pittman) who might be even younger than Grimsby.

As to differences in experience? Let’s not forget that:

Lizzie has been training her whole life to be the wife of the queen’s watchdog,

She had to deal with the death of her fiancé and then deal with his supposed return,

She’s destroyed dozens of bizarre dolls (don’t forget that Double Charles were not on the Campania in manga canon, only in the anime adaptation, so Phipps hasn’t fought bizarre dolls),

She’s dealing with finding out her true betrothed is “alive but ill” (not true) and her supposed betrothed is a liar (true but for reasons),

And she’s fought a literal demon.

For a 14 year old, she’s had a lot of experiences she shouldn’t have to deal with. No one should have to deal with any of this stuff. And she’s been a total badass.

I say they are actually quite well matched, Lizzie and Phipps. He’s very professional at this job, but he also appreciates “cute” things, like the chick 🐣 that hatches in ch66, and he’s lightning-fast at embroidery! (Finny’s hat.) He even canonically (now, anyways) added the lace to Grey’s uniform. I think they would give each other balance.

I say give Lizzie at least four years and let her choose her own mate. I also say Phipps would be a great choice. 👍 👍

I can see them as becoming friends but not lovers. There’s been no indication that either of them is interested in girls/women. Besides, they are both still minors. You talk of the sorts of things underage girls sometimes do, even if they like boys.

I would much prefer that Lizzie gets to live to adulthood (since that’s a bit iffy right now) and discovers how cute and sweet and awesome Charles Phipps really is. Plus, he’s younger than Charles Grey, so the age difference wouldn’t be too big (once she’s of age). I’m all about adult Lizzipps. Let them get married, have babies, and also raise chickens and bunnies.

Sieglinde? Gah! She’s like 11 or 12? I cannot fathom her with anyone. Not beyond friendship. Not anytime soon. I swear, she gets her filthy words from what she heard in the witch’s village and from the books she had access to there. Her precociousness is not something to be taken advantage of. Also, Wolfram would beat the living hell out of anyone who tried... as he should.

okay but I’m curious as to why you think Lizzy and Phipps would be a good match? like in all honestly.

Well, I do have at least one recent post where I bullet-point my reasons. 😐
