Just a little man
hello,I hope it's not too early to ask a question. I'm a freshman in my high school and my school is doing a production of "To Kill a Mockingbird". I've never been in a play or musical. I want to be a theater actress, but I'm scared I don't have what it takes. I don't know how to act well and I have stage fright. I want to be able to musicals in my 4 years of high school but I'm afraid that I can't do it. I can sing and I've done solos before but I need advice. any suggestions?
Heyo. Lizzy here. My suggestion for you is to just get involved in theatre in anyway you can. Audition for shows! You may not get a lead the first time around, but that’s okay! (I don’t know how your high school works when casting, but if you get cast as an ensemble role TAKE IT.)
Honestly, surrounding yourself with talented theatre people is key, I think. You really learn from being in the environment. Lemme tell ya, I didn’t do very much acting before or really during high school. I was mostly involved in technical theatre, but it really helped me to be able to watch talented actors and actresses and see what they were doing that made them good. I listened to directors critiques even if they weren’t for me. Take any acting advice (even if it’s not for you) and apply it to yourself. Eventually you’ll be able to figure out what’s works for you.
As for having stage fright, well, sometimes that doesn’t go away. Trust me, I have terrible anxiety performing ANYTHING in front of people. (Acting, singing, playing the piano... it sucks) I remember opening night of a show that I had my first lead in I was quite literally bawling 5 minutes before we started. Performing is scary, it really is. But (I know for me, anyways) once I get on stage, and I get the reactions of the audience to work off of I just go. And it’s amazing. You just got to have confidence. At least pretend like you know what you’re doing. “Fake it til you make it” -MY LIFE MOTTO. (I think Lyric and Poncho mentioned this before, BUT SERIOUSLY, it really does work)
You know, if being a theatre actress if something you really want, and you have the ambition to work for it, then I don’t think you need to worry about the skills you may lack. Just get involved. You’ll learn as you go. I wish you so much luck in your theatre pursuits. If you’d like to talk some more my personal inbox is always open. (I can totally message you privately if you wanna come off anon *wink, wink*)
