Fluff 27 (I’m thinking Abby/Kerry)
Angst 39 (as above)
General 20 (probably as above but maybe Susan or Elizabeth instead of Kerry idk, as you see fit)
Fluff #27 - “Are you blushing?”
Kerry looks up from a stack of documents on her lap to see Abby make her way from the bathroom, her head wrapped in a towel. She gives Kerry a puzzled look upon noticing the said documents, but she smiles anyway and takes a seat next to Kerry on the couch.
“I thought you’d been told to get some rest,” Abby remarks as she reaches for a TV remote control situated on the coffee table.
“I am resting,” Kerry replies, her eyes still on the documents, “but the hospital is not going to run itself, is it?”
Abby shrugs. “Well, that’s why they have Anspaugh in your place while you’re recovering. So that you wouldn’t have to do…all this,” she points at one particular file Kerry is holding—whatever it is, Abby has no interest in finding out.
“I don’t like having idle hands. And I want to make sure I’m caught up when I get back,” Kerry insists, prompting Abby to chuckle. She has been staying at Kerry’s place several days a week since the latter’s hip replacement surgery to help look after Henry, and the experience has made her realize that doctors do make the worst patients—especially when the doctor in question is Kerry Weaver.
As much as Kerry wants to prove otherwise, Abby can tell that the older woman is getting tired, her fingers repeatedly rubbing her temple. Not that Abby can blame her; recovery from the surgery has taken its toll on Kerry, especially with a very active toddler in the house, and her insistence to keep working while recovering does not make it better.
It was a wonder that she said yes to Abby’s offer to stay and help look after Henry; Abby had expected the stubborn redhead to reject even the slightest help. However, over the years of their friendship they have developed a mutual trust, with the resident being pretty much the only person Kerry can truly open up to. This still takes Abby by surprise from time to time, even after Kerry asked her to be Henry’s legal guardian in case something happened during the surgery.
“Kerry,” Abby says softly while putting away the remote control in her hand. “You’re exhausted, and you need some rest. Come on, let me help you to bed.”
For a second Abby thinks Kerry is going to argue and insist on staying up and working, but much to her surprise Kerry simply nods in response. As Abby is about to help Kerry stand up, Kerry puts up a hand to stop her and instead gestures for the younger woman to stay on the couch.
“Can we stay here for a minute?” Kerry mutters.
If Abby is surprised, she does a good job not showing it, and silently she returns to her previous position. Kerry sighs, her stack of documents more or less forgotten, and she relaxes deeper onto the couch. Carefully, Abby scoots closer—while still keeping enough distance to make Kerry comfortable—and takes one of Kerry’s hands in hers.
Kerry takes a deep breath before turning her head to face Abby, and the latter sports a sympathetic smile. However, the smile quickly turns into a frown as Abby notices a subtle change in Kerry’s facial expression, which alarms Kerry.
“Kerry, are you…” Abby asks, “are you blushing?”
Kerry feels her face getting even warmer at Abby’s question, although she does not even make the slightest effort to hide it. While something in her head tells her to take her hand away from Abby’s, she does not have the heart to do so, and instead squeezes Abby’s hand.
“Abby, I…” Kerry stammers. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean…”
Abby simply shakes her head. “Hey, it’s okay,” she says in a low voice. “It’s alright.”
“I-it’s just…” Kerry continues, her voice breaking. “I’ve been feeling this for a long time, and the harder I fight it, the stronger it gets, I—”
“Kerry,” Abby cuts her off. “You don’t have to fight it, okay?” She moves closer toward Kerry, placing her free arm around the other woman while whispering, “Me too.”
Kerry does not put up a fight as Abby moves closer, instead opting to relax in Abby’s embrace. As soon as Kerry closes her eyes, she feels their lips meet, the world around them instantly fading away while the two women come to terms with their feelings for each other. Kerry wraps one arm around Abby, willing for her to come closer, and Abby does just that, a smile growing on her face at Kerry relaxing deeper in her arms.
“Abby,” Kerry whispers after they pull away. “This-this will change things. Are you sure you—”
“I want things to change,” Abby replies. “And yes, Kerry, I’m sure. I’ve been feeling this for a long time too.”
“But I thought you were—”
“It’s not important,” Abby cuts her off again. “What’s important is that we have each other now, and I don’t think I can look back. Things will definitely change, but I want them to.
“And we don’t have to fight it,” Abby says, her smile growing as she pulls Kerry into another kiss.
