okay i wasn’t into hawks before, but seeing him in the newest episode??? i get it.
Headcanon that Tsukishima received offers to play on D1 volleyball teams, but ultimately turned them down. Not because he didn’t want to play for them per se, but because he’s still wary of devoting 100% of himself to volleyball. Sure, his inferiority complex has improved since high school. Rationally, he knows that he does maybe have enough talent to compete on that level (because why else would he have been scouted, right?). But there’s still a little part of him that whispers things like, “why take the risk of wasting time and energy when someone better will come along and replace you anyways? At least if you don’t try, you won’t get hurt, right?”
Don’t get him wrong though, Tsukki has learned to genuinely care about the sport--and that’s what makes playing with the Sendai Frogs so great. He can enjoy the thrill of volleyball without the risks and uncertainties involved with being a full-time athlete. Because who in their right mind would want to live based off of uncertainties? (Well, apart from a certain red-headed middle-blocker-turned-wing-spiker and a former “King of the Court,” that is.)
And although he would never in a million years say it aloud, Tsukki admires the way Hinata and Kageyama clawed their way up to the national volleyball stage. Specifically, he admires how confidently they blindly put all their eggs into one basket and out of sheer talent and drive, ended up doing what they love full-time. Tsukishima is happy for the both of them and at the same time, he is content where he ended up, too.
At least that’s what he tells himself.
Yes, things may have worked out quite comfortably for Tsukki, but there’s something deep down that won’t let him feel fully satisfied. It’s a feeling in his chest that makes him wish he could be on that same court as his former teammates, one that is constantly clashing with his own thoughts of inadequacy. It’s the same feeling that Yamaguchi had confronted him about at summer training camp all those years ago:
Pride.
And in order to protect his sense of pride from shattering into a million pieces, he tells himself he is happy right where he is. That is how he’ll stop himself from getting hurt. But what Tsukishima doesn’t yet realize is that sometimes not trying at all, is what hurts the most in the end.
