Day Thirty One
Ann Arbor, Michigan. Saturday, October 5th.
Attending a football game at “The Big House,” aka Michigan Stadium, was never a consideration. I’ve seen Notre Dame play twice here, and the last occasion – the “Desmond Howard” game in 1991 – still angers me. I didn’t need another reminder of what the place looks like in person.
But one of my big donors decided otherwise. Bob, a Michigan native and UM grad, invoked his right to pick what game I see with him. He thought Homecoming Weekend would be perfect for me. Friends like these…
I girded myself for a thoroughly annoying day surrounded by Wolverines congratulating themselves on how wonderful it is to be a Wolverine. But I did not prepare for embarrassing myself in front of a Wolverine coaching legend.
Walking across campus three hours before kickoff, I spotted an older man walking alone toward us who at first I thought was Secretary of State John Kerry. Instantly, I rejected that idenfitication, as the diplomat would obviously be surrounded by security. As we approached, I stopped and said, “Coach! Can I please get a picture with you?” He cringed, clearly unhappy at the intrustion. So I quickly began explaining Sports Year, “I’m on Day 31 of a sports road trip where I’m attending a different event every day for 365 days.” His face changed completely as joy replaced tension. “That’s amazing!” he said. “I’d be happy to take a picture with you.”
I quickly set my iPhone to video and handed it to Bob. Arms around each other, Coach asked me where I was from. Sheepish, I told him, “Actually, I’m a Notre Dame guy.” He groaned and pulled away from me a bit. I tassured him, with a light fist to the shoulder, “I have a great deal of respect for you and everything you stood for.” That seemed to appeae him and he got back in the picture. I started to narrate. “Sports Year, here with Michigan’s national championship winning coach… Gary Moeller.” As I said the words, they didn’t sound right.
The coach stepped away from me, offended. “Nope. I’m not Moeller.” I blinked in confusion before finally realizing he was Lloyd Carr, the man who replaced Gary Moeller. Coach Carr did win the national title, so I knew what I was talking about. Except for his name, that is.
That gaffe nearly ruined my day. I pride myself on my sports knowledge. For instance, I knew Coach Carr had been an English teacher early in his career. Yet, I blew it on his name. That’s one I’ll never get back. I’m sending him an apology letter and a signed copy of my latest book, but I doubt I’ll hear from him. And I don’t deserve to.
Inside the stadium, everyone treated me nicely, which surprised me until I realized they all assumed I was a Wolverine fan due to the yellow Michigan t-shirt Bob forced me to wear.
Waging a guerilla war, I taught the 16-year old gilr next to me the “real” words to the UM fight song: “Hail to those mother^ckers…”
110,000 people rooted for the Wolverines to win big. I rooted for the forecasted rainstorms to hold off until after the game. We all won.

I don't ever in my life remember going into any game feeling like I was an underdog. I certainly have never experienced that at Michigan.
Lloyd Carr
Les Miles was prepared to come home and all Michigan had to do was wait a few weeks.
But in a bungled coaching search that included unexplained and inconsistent behavior by former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, a "very un-Michigan like" hiring process finally set Rich Rodriguez up to fail.
That's the takeaway from "Three And Out," the new book by John U. Bacon that gives readers an all-access pass to Rodriguez's three cringe-worthy years as leader of the winningest college football program of all time.
The book may surprise Michigan fans, as Bacon is the Michigan professor who wrote a book with legendary coach Bo Schembechler. But here Bacon reports that those left to uphold the coach's legacy chop-blocked Rodriguez so much that Schembechler’s "The Team, The Team, The Team" mantra seems like a punch line.
While the best part of the book -- which will be released Tuesday ($28, Farrar, Straus and Giraux) -- is the access Bacon had to Schembechler Hall once Rodriguez arrived, the drama begins well before "Coach Rod" is introduced. Click here to read an excerpt.

This is why I defended him for as long as I did. I'm so glad that theyfinally broke the silence on this shit. You were a Michigan Man in my book, Coach Rod.
