It’s funny how quickly ‘her new place’ seems to have become ‘their new place’.

It starts with a casual ‘you know, I have a couch’ on a perfectly standard Thursday night at the Gaslight. It evolves into this: the two of them sitting on that aforementioned couch at four on a Saturday morning, Midge making notes on her set while they both eat takeout and complain about the quality of TV available at that time of night.

She doesn’t realise he’s fallen asleep until she feels his head on her shoulder, and she’s smiling to herself even before she’s turned her head just enough so that she can see his face. The idea of Llewyn Davis - the Village’s resident grouch - peacefully sleeping against her shoulder, is one she knows the rest of their little gang would find unbelievable at best.

Midge sets her notebook down in her lap, reaches for the remote so that she can lower the volume on the TV, and presses a kiss to his hairline. Something she knows she probably wouldn’t get away with under any other circumstances.

“You don’t get to decide that.” 

Midge is always quick, but she’s rarely sharp with it - not like this. She doesn’t bother to hide that he’s struck a nerve, doesn’t bother to hide that it hurts because he knows he’s struck one, and he still said it anyway.

It isn’t like she isn’t use to Llewyn being blunt. As a rule, they don’t coddle each other. Not when one of them has had a shit set, not when one of them is being an asshole about - well, about anything. 

Not even when they’re both grieving.

And that’s fine, because the gentleness from others has only aggravated him and (selfishly) it has helped her to be an antidote to that. Their love for Mike had been so different, and Midge knows she’ll never fully understand just how his death has hurt Llewyn. But she misses him, too - misses her friend, who stood through innumerable Columbia faculty parties with her, who first introduced her to the world she then escaped into when her marriage broke down. And she feels like it’d be a betrayal of that friendship to let Llewyn push her away now.

It isn’t just love for and loyalty to Mike that has kept her in Llewyn’s orbit, though. She loves him, too, much as he might not want to acknowledge that. And Midge isn’t the type to let her friends push her away, no matter how hard they try.

“You don’t get to decide whether I’m wasting my time or not. I know what wasting my time on people feels like, Llewyn. And you know what? This isn’t it.”

Susie’s post-set analysis finishes just as she notices Llewyn getting ready to leave, and Midge grabs her coat and hurries to catch up with him on the sidewalk outside the Gaslight. Most of the patrons have long since filtered out and sought other places in which to hide from this particularly cold New York night, and she slips her arms into her coat as she takes the steps up to the street two at a time.

“Hey,” The red of her nails glimmers in the streetlight as she reaches for him, fingertips brushing the worn fabric of his coat. “Come get a drink with me?”
