A long pause. Okay, so she just has to say — something, right? Curiosity burns harder than the sun. Julie is underneath the shade of palms. He is not. Lets the sun beat down on him, half-dressed and somehow regal in spite of it. He seems to come by during the day more often than not. Nights are reserved, she thinks, for her. Which she hates. And wants to learn about. So she thinks and thinks. Settles on something. Tears come to her before her resolve does. Says finally, looking at the waves: "I think. Um." Blinking, she sniffs, looks even further away. Wow, this sucks, huh? "My mom — helped, uh, put me on that. Boat?"

He's seen her hunger, the kind that has nothing to do with the food he cut into small bites and lifted to her mouth when she was still too weak to serve herself. He knows his best recourse is to feed her just enough of himself to keep her hungry — if he ever wants to leave this accursed island.

But it gnaws at him, too. How long has it been since he's had anyone to speak to but her?

Odysseus keeps his arms loosely folded across his broad chest, a stance that doesn't soften with her tears, but he watches her with a great deal of care. Not to let the curiosity get the best of him.

Why is the obvious question, so it isn't the one he asks.

"When was that? You were in a bad way by the time you made it to me."

There was a small part of her that was hoping that that would be the end of it. That she would offer her one tidbit and he would offer his, and then she'd glean all there is to know about him.

—Well, that never works, anyway. She doesn't think she ever learned anything of Géraud. Not anything of use about him, all their time together. All those years. Her heart pings at the reminder. Maybe that's her curse, more than anything that could ever come from the sea: the unknowable distance between her and anything she loves.

She sniffs. Is grateful, suddenly, that she even can cry — that this man has provided water that isn't drowning in salt. "I — don't — um, it was. Long. A long time." Having never been on a ship, she doesn't know how long a voyage is, but imagines it's something like that. "What month is it? I remember — June?"

the gifs got me wondering if Julie herself likes to swim, paddle board, surf, etc! Do you think she'd like to hang out on a boat? OJ boat/beach episode?

[eyes glowing] yes. julie literally loves being in the water at all times. i don't write it a lot, but she feels a pull to it at almost all times!!! in my brain she has a pretty keen sense for the water distribution system in new york city and chicago, and the huge pipes are very noticeable to her. very distracting, like rivers and the ocean and stuff. i think she could lose hours and hours and hours watching water.

she's kind of scared of deep water so she doesn't swim in it very often (yeah yeah, she already faces ridicule about it from certain people….) but she loves to be on it! loves boats and paddleboards and inflatable structures and bridges and docks and being outside in general! (except for the bugs.)
