Follow sweet children
I'll show thee the way
Through all the pain
And the sorrows
Weep not poor children
For life is this way
Murdering beauty and passions
Little nightmares 2, the eye entitys existence and the children's “immunity”( due to recent research, I no longer believe the kids are immune to the eyes control because they develop an imaginary world in their minds. Only that they don't yet understand the reality of the world and their situation which prevent them from developing the same corrupt desires adults have to fall prey to its control, other than the imaginary world part, the rest of my theory still stands, I will update a new theory with this info later)
Newly updated theory here:https://itstimetotheorize.tumblr.com/post/660446100577304576/little-nightmares-2-theory-a-winning-chance
When it comes to the enemies of the little nightmares world there is no greater mystery than the entity which rules over all others, the all seeing eye.
Now, despite its first official appearance within the little nightmares 2 game there were still so many question left unanswered, what exactly is the eye entity? why is it there? and most importantly where did it come from?
well, from what we understand, the eye entity is by no means mindless, it is very much intelligent, however, unlike most villains seen in games, the eye entity appears to have no real desire to conquer or rule, no, from what we have analyzed, this entity appears to have one and only one goal in its life....it wants to feed! feed on what exactly? well, isn't it obvious...it feeds upon the bodies and souls of the residents of the world!
The eye entity didn't need to show itself, it never needed to do much of anything really, because all it ever needed was to enslave those who would be more than useful in aiding in its survival, people such as the thin man, lady of the maw etc.. were all nothing more than puppets under the influence of its hypnotic light, the only clue we ever had of its control over them were the vast number of eyes seen placed all around them!
However, no one knows for sure what the eye entity really is, some have theorized the eye is some sort of god, others believed it was simply a creature created from the bodies of the dead, a collection of the viewers consciousness. However, after analyzing and investigating every possible cryptic message the developers had provided, many had soon theorized the eye entity could actually be a malevolent force brought into existence through the combined wishes, dreams and desires of its residents, as it manifested into the world it began to feed upon the souls of the people and once it had drained their bodies of every last drop of their living essence, it took their bodies and combined them with its own, allowing it to grow and thrive.
Overtime, it learned to live on and expand its reach by constantly latching itself onto the qualities shared by all residents of the world, basic human desires (such as hunger or the need for escapism) and most important of all...fears in the form of nightmares come to life!. Nightmares are tied to weakness and its precisely these weaknesses that many now believe is what allowed the eye entity to expand its reach out onto the world and feed as much as it desired. Well, whatever “it” may be, there was still one thing about it that continued to be questioned by theorists...its victims.
The adults of the world have always proven themselves to be more than easy targets for the eye entity to capture....but what about the children? every antagonist seen thus far has been an adult, the only child enemy seen within the game was the pretender, but unlike the rest of the kids, she does not act like a child, she “pretends” to be a grown up and the one in control of others. The main difference between the adults and the pretender, when compared to the rest of the children, is that they lack the one quality all children have displayed within the little nightmares world, childlike innocence!
“your inner child is the only thing standing between you and life as a resident ”, but what exactly is it about a kids childish nature that has allowed them to resist the control of the all seeing eye? could there be more to a childs innocence? When the little nightmares 1 and 2 games were released, the developers had only two thing to say about six and the children who had to face the terrors of the little nightmares world, “these kids are thrown into a world that hates them, they have to find some way to survive until adulthood”, “awakening in a world she can not recognize”, what do these words tell us? well, they tell us that the children we have seen thus far do not fully understand why it is they are in such a terrifying word, they do not understand the things around them and they are afraid of the monsters who are constantly after them, those that do manage to survive into adulthood are destined to share the same fate as the rest of the adults seen within the world, so then... why is it that these children are immune to the eye entities control?!, is it their age? their innocent pure souls? we have only ever been told the children are constantly surrounded by things they fear, things they do not understand!......unless... what if it was always their lack of understanding that saved them from the eye?
Viewers have always been described as people who depend on the transmission because “The Viewers live life through the screen and cannot imagine a world without it. All those wonderful colours, sounds and shapes, dancing before their eyes, mesmerising them, pacifying them, fattening them up. The Transmission gives them all they need, and demands only one thing in return...”, if the adults cannot imagine a world without the transmission, let alone bring themselves to question it, then what if unlike the adults the children are doing something to leave themselves with no real desire to escape into the world seen through the tvs?
Where am I going with this?... well... perhaps the reason children are so capable of resisting the eye entities control is not because they are just innocent children... but because their childlike minds have shielded them from trying to understand what’s real and what’s fake!
If the children we have seen thus far are having a hard time understanding the world they are in now then perhaps these kids have already done for themselves what the eye entity had failed to do to them...these children... may quite possibly have already imagined for themselves a perfect world to see! what does this tell us about the eye entity? well, it tells us the reason children are so difficult to control is not because they cant be hypnotized and thrown into the perfect false world it has created, but because the childrens desires have already been fulfilled! Any attempt to capture their minds would fail because these kids have already IMAGINED a perfect world to escape to!
Is this why the adults are so much easier to control? unlike kids, adults do not hold onto their inner child for long, let alone carry on their childlike imagination, their minds are purely consumed by their everyday struggles and fears for the terrors that await in the real world. When the eye had presented to them a perfect world for their minds to escape to, then perhaps the adults did not bother to question, let alone resist, a world where everything is perfect compared to the cruel reality they had been living in!. The children on the other hand may have chosen to believe the opposite!, to them, the reality they have seen thus far may be considered from time to time a false world they do not belong!, to them the perfect world they have imagined within their own minds, is the real world they will inevitably return to!....but we already know they wont....so what happens to a child if they ever come to the realization that this world of nightmares, this land filled with childhood fears, is real?......perhaps six had already given us this answer
When six was introduced into the little nightmares 2 game, she was described as someone who is “awaking in a world she can not recognize”, meaning that just as any other child, six also had a hard time understand why she was there and quite possibly did not know what was real and what was just a nightmare! If this is true, then perhaps the reason six became corrupted by the tower near the very end of the game was not just because the tower had infected her with escapism, but because the tower had finally made six understand that the horrific world she was in was always real, but most of all... it made her realize their was no escape from it! if six had come to the realization that their was no better world to return to, would that have made her easier for the eye to infect with its hypnotic light? would this have made her feel the need to find a place that could provide her with the comfort and safety she had always dreamed? would this desire to escape have been what finally allowed the all seeing eye to throw her into the perfect false world it had created for its victims!?
If so, then maybe six had already lost what no child should ever lose as she remained trapped within the tower...she lost her innocence...and then....she lost her soul! just like the rest of the viewers!,
If mono hadn't interfered and done what he did, her soul (aka shadow six) could have been truly lost forever, it would have faded from the world!
Is this why the developers had stated to the fans “awaken your inner child to save six from the darkness”? did we need to awaken our childlike innocense, our childlike minds in order to prevent the eye entity from claiming us!? would our ongoing need to make sense of the word become our downfall? would it have brought us one step closer to ending up just as the rest of the resident of the world?... maybe....but what about mono?
Mono had always been a very peculiar child, unlike most children we have seen, he does not easily run from the monsters of the world, he fights! . When the developers presented mono, they specifically state “ Mono takes refuge where he can. His thin paper mask offers some respite, helping him forget that the world outside hates him, and wants him to fail - but he can't stay hidden forever.”, unlike six who is described as a child who has awoken in world she can not under stand, monos description implies he is fully aware of the worlds cruelty towards him, so much in fact that he had at one point placed a bag over his head to give him some sort of comfort from the world, what doe this tell us about mono specifically?...it tells us that unlike the other children, mono may not be struggling with coming to terms of what is real and what isn't, he knows this world is real because he has experienced the worlds cruelty all to well!. But if mono knows not to question this reality then how was it that he was able to resist the eyes control all throughout the pale city yet still fall victim to its hypnotic light near the end of the game? well...what if mono had other things running through his little head at the time?
when it comes to mono, the developers had always described him as “An uncommonly single-minded child. When he sets himself to a task, he rarely gives up before it's completed.” I’ve always found monos description to be very interesting, why? because it had always described mono as someone who is extremely determined. What’s more is how unlike all the kids we have seen thus far, mono is more than willing to plunge himself into danger in order to accomplish the task at hand!, after all, mono risked everything to travel through the woods and save six from the hunter, he risked blending in with the bullies to find her in the school, he willingly chose to travel deeper and deeper into the city to find some way to stop the signal tower and most important of all, he more than willingly chose to come face to face with the thin man and enter the tower itself in order to free six from the towers transmission!
Everything mono had done was something no kid in the little nightmares world would dare to do themselves, after all, to any normal kid, it was never ones desire to face the world, rather, it was to find some way to escape it and find the safe world they had always imagined belonging to.
Perhaps the reason young mono was never easily entranced by the tvs was never because he couldn't be hypnotized, but because mono might never have had the desire to escape the world around him, he knew he couldn't!, so instead, he chose to end it! especially after what happened to six!. Mono knew the tower was calling to him, he knew six was inside it after hearing her music box play through the TVs,
Unfortunately, despite monos determination to save her and despite his growing ambition to end the signal, Mono remained oblivious to one very important, very crucial thing...the tower did not plan on letting him leave once he entered its domain!
“ The black tower calls. And it will never stop unless you stop it. Are you ready to go back?” so then, if monos single minded way of thinking about the world was truly his own unique protection against the very entity that had relentlessly chased after him, then what lead him to finally fall victim to the towers transmission?, what left him to finally give up his battle and accept his fate as the thin man? well...isn't it obvious, mono did not feel the need to escape such a cruel reality until the one closest to him left him feeling alone and betrayed...
The moment six let go of his hand and let him fall into the deep dark abys of the eye entities flesh, was the moment which finally left mono feel to hurt to ever want to consider the world he was in as a place he should continue fighting, to him, sixes betrayal was the very moment the tower needed to make mono feel the need to look for an escape from the cruelty he was in, it was this moment of weakness which had finally allowed the tower to grab hold of his mind and imprison him within the false world it had created within its very walls.
but as we all know, this was still not enough to keep mono trapped within its walls, even after being forced to endlessly live within in a loop where his life would be recycled over and over again, Thin Man(aka mono) never gave up on “searching for something”, what that something is well, I’ll leave that to you guys to wonder about. The only question now is, what happened to six as she escaped the tower and was left to journey the maw alone? did she truly forget about mono and everything they had done for each other? did she still feel the need to look for a place that could provide her with the salvation she seeked? maybe...but then again....maybe not
When six took the powers of the lady near the end of little nightmares 1 and used them to reunite with what many now believe was her lost soul, (aka shadow six) did she understand what had happened to her then?, did she remember every horror she faced in the pale city before becoming the emotionless body she was left as, after leaving the tower?
Did she understand the one responsible for her suffering was never the lady, the thin man or mono, but the eye itself!? after waking up in a world she could not recognize, after traveling through the nest, the pale city and the maw, did six finally understand what the world was?, did she understand what the eye was?, if she did, what could she have decided to do with herself as she made her way out the maws doors?
After all the pain and suffering she had faced, after all the carnage she inflicted on the guests, as she walked out the maw and gazed at the eye entities symbol staring at her near the end of little nightmares 1, did she still feel afraid? or had that fear been replaced by a far more powerful emotion? ANGER! if six had grown an overwhelming hatred for what the world had done to her and what it had made her do, did six feel what mono felt near the end of little nightmares 2?, was she fed up with the worlds cruelty towards her? did she choose to stop hiding and instead chose to fight back? annihilate every single terrifying creature which had attempted to harm her?. Now that she is out of the maw and as we watched her wait on the small island located above the maw itself, one could only ever assume six would admit defeat as we watched her look out into the vast ocean waters...
but perhaps her fate is still as much a mystery as monos. Near the end of the day, who knows what six will do, after all, “six is not a normal child”. Should six choose to continue her efforts of leaving the maw and make her way back to land, one thing is for certain, the all seeing eye has no idea the kind of wrath it had awoken within six, but I guess we will just have to wait and see... for now that’s just a theory... a little nightmares 2 theory!
