Thomas' derailment in Thomas gets Bumped was based on a real accident. On June 5th 1950, LNER A1 class No. 60153 was hauling a Newcastle-King's Cross express when she was derailed at Tollerton due to track that had distorted in the summer heat. Thankfully, no one was killed, but nine passengers and 60153's driver and fireman were injured, though they all made full recoveries. Thomas' mishap was rather less severe, as he remained upright, but the root cause was exactly the same. I used to think that track distorting due to heat would be impossible in the British climate, but it turns out that it did actually happen.

BR blue appreciation:

An appreciation of the short-lived blue livery BR applied to it's front-line express engines in it's early years. A smart livery that unfortunately didn't last long. Incidentally, in addition to the classes seen here, the LMS Princess Royal Pacifics received the blue livery as well, but I couldn't find any colour photos of them in this livery.

Grantham: the Streamliner Years at the National Festival of Railway Modelling, 23/11/2025. This layout depicts Grantham station in the late 1930's, with Gresley Pacifics, Ivatt Atlantics and many others in operation. A detail I liked was the moving road vehicles. Gives the layout even more life. The A4s on the streamlined expresses were the highlight.
