Smoky sky from LNU Lightning Complex Fire burning north of Fairfield, CA 8/20/20
I had planned on uploading images from the con I was at this weekend but I am stalling that in favor of posting about the fires going on in California. This is a picture of the fountain grove area from a satellite. Chances are you have seen areas like Coffey park in the news and they are repeating these images which shows you how incredibly bad this is but it doesn’t give you a scale of things. Coffey park is around 500 residences burned. The place I had my first date with my now husband was in that area and it is a pile of rubble. Fountain grove is a couple miles east of it and was devastated similarly. There are a lot of communities that are gone and several people I know are evacuated or have flat out lost their homes. As of posting this there are 3500 homes and businesses that are destroyed. This image represents about 250 buildings and many of the burnt neighborhoods look similar to this one. Imagine 12 more images just like this one with houses burnt to nothing AND the images you have seen on coffey park.
If you are near the area and you have the time the thing that is needed most is your time. Find yourself a GOOD face mask and see if you can volunteer. There is plenty of info out there about face masks but realize regular dust and smog masks do not work. ash is extremely fine particulate.
If you cannot donate your time, but you have extra money or things you are willing to part with, look up in your area to see if there are donations being taken or you can donate money online. Gofundme has built out a general donation for VERIFIED gofundme campaigns that are linked to the fires. This means they will spread the money you donate across those in need who have made gofundme campaigns. Every penny counts when someone has lost everything but the clothes on their back.
Please feel free to ask me questions about the fire. I have become a fountain of information in trying to make sure that my friends and family are safe and I was up there in the smoke on Monday and Tuesday. I have both first hand and second hand stories.
