Monday Listen: Lobby Boxer - Lobby Boxer (bandcamp)

To start things off, I figured I'd post something that's been on hot rotation pretty much since I found it a while back. The sophomore release from the St. Louis trio reminds me of an amalgamation of a few different acts. They have the driving guitar lines of Everyone Everywhere or Algernon Cadwallader mixed with the technicallity of the Fall of Troy, but the vocals more like a post hardcore act like The Receiving End of Sirens. I keep finding myself going back to this one even though it came out nearly 9 months ago. Don't judge the whole EP by the first track, though. It grows and changes with each song moving in different directions all while keeping the listener's attention. There's some incredible shifts of intensity that show the versatility of the band, like in the second half of The Truman Show. I'm a huge fan of the chaotic intro to Headrush especially when it is followed with the soothing harmonies of Vocalist Zach Fendelman. I'm sure you'll love this EP just as much as I do. If you like what you hear, I of course recommend supporting the band with a purchase or seeing them live. They don't tour much but have an upcoming show this February. 

My recommendation: start at the top and listen all the way down. All five tracks are excellent. I can only hope more bands follow suit and head away from the lo-fi route like these guys.

- LOBBY BOXER INTERVIEW -

Lobby Boxer released the 3 track e.p "Teddy" in the summer of last year and its just flawless. I personally can't fault it, the vocals are gritty and filled with emotion and the musicianship on the record is stunning and the overall production is spot on! I figured why do you need me to explain why it's incredible and why you will love it. 

However i wanted to find out why it's only 3 tracks long ? 

So i threw the guys a few questions and here is what they said ! 

1. How we all doing? How you all feeling about the band ? 

 Everything is going great! In just under a year we've shared the stage with bands like The World Is..., Dads, Old Gray, Perfect Future, Cute Is What We Aim For, Turnover, and many others! Things are moving way faster than we anticipated (which is definitely a good thing)!

2. What insprised the name "Lobby Boxer" ?Have any of you actually taken part in what the name suggests?

We were kinda just throwing out combinations of various words that sounded cool. We were almost "Orchard Army," but Lobby Boxer just had a certain ring to it. It also reminds me a lot of the time I fought a kangaroo in an underground Wisconsin fighting circuit.

3. Your e.p is fantastic I must say! Any reason why there is only 3 tracks on it?

Thanks a lot! Three was the magic number for us. At the time, we felt they were our three strongest tracks. Money was also a factor, but we didn't want to rush the writing process. It all boiled down to wanting our music available in a high quality medium, and Teddy was the result.

4. Whats the plan for you guys this year? Are we gunna be getting another e.p?

2014 is gonna be a good year, that much is certain! We are going into the studio for a week in March to record our new 5 track EP (no title yet), and we're extremely excited to show you what we've concocted over these past couple months. In addition to that, we're planning a summer tour across the midwest US. Though this all seems far away, keep in mind, our song "Anxiety" will be featured on a 4 way split through Save Your Generation Records, and will be available for download on our Bandcamp soon!

5. What's the writing process like for you guys? does someone come in with a full song? Or is it more of a jam it out situation?

Typically, Zach will come up with a riff (sometimes arrange an entire song), pitch it to Andrew and I, and we'll build off of that. Once we're content with a song, we go back and try to add in small details to improve the song. Zach will write lyrics and arrange vocals once we have the song laid out, then we practice the hell out of it until it's burnt into our brains backwards and forwards!

6. What bands are you listening to at the moment? What release are you most looking forward to this year?

Defeater, Title Fight, Basement, Special Explosion, Foxing (the hometown heroes), Caspian, The Wonder Years, The Mars Volta, The Album Leaf, You Blew It!, Modern Baseball, Old Gray, And So I Watch You From Afar, Animals as Leaders, American Football, Brand New, Citizen, etc. You name it, we'll listen to it.

7. You are from the states but you post often on what once was "UK EMO". Do you find you get a better response over here for your music or over in the states?

The UK Emo page overall is really fun to be a part of. The random threads, Brand New arguments, and general appreciation for new music made it hard not to fall in love with the community. The response was similar to the States, but there were just WAY more people in the UK Emo page that responded to each post, which was really awesome!

8. Anything you would like to add? Things we should all know about you guys that we probably dont?

Just be on the lookout for new music! We're hoping to go far this year, and we appreciate all the support!
