Weirdly I couldn’t stand Saejima UNTIL Pirates in Hawaii, and now I’m all aboard like a switch flicked. Love love love your readings of him and Majima too
omg. thats incredible. honestly ive heard from quite a few people that pirates completely changed their view/reading of saejima (ME INCLUDED TO AN EXTENT) and it's really not that surprising to me, especially considering y4 and y5 remastered suffered from some very unfortunate localization choices for saejima specifically, obscuring/misrepresenting his character, and i thought pirates did a wayyy better job of portraying him accurately. so that makes sense to me. and thank you!! im so glad to hear u like my thoughts on them im always trying to understand what the fuck is going on with the two of them lmfao
some examples of the loc changes under the cut btw
cannot recommend enough: going through this scene in japanese with google translate
like this is so much more deranged in the original bc hes making a joke about "the dragon of dojima" being unbeatable. "the dragon of dojima vs. cancer: who would win" type dry ass joke (to which kiryu replies "maybe..." btw) i cant believe we were robbed of this
AND THE LINE ABOUT GOING TO HELL? NOT IN THERE
the word he uses is "anoyo" which doesnt seem to have any negative connotations as far as i can tell. v neutral word, "afterlife" seems pretty accurate
its just. a different tone in the original scene which feels way truer to the characters and their relationships. majima is not this cynical, he's not making dry jokes about kiryu going to hell but he does try to deflect it with humor in his own way
daigo's outraged reaction is also recontextualized: it's not that he's upset about the insensitive "hell" joke or him being flippant, it's that majima is reminding kiryu of his approaching death and how much he has to lose. it reads to me as daigo finding it "cruel" more than anything else
this line is also much more earnest and heartbreaking in the original, and imo more consistent with kiryu's established characterization bc he has a very straightforward way of speaking
its super worth checking out the original scenes bc of stuff like this
