Awareness Wednesday from Upward Harvest! Out of all the issues our industry is dealing with, this one might frustrate us the worst! Let's start out with the definition of Fraud: wrongful deception intended to result in financial or personal gain - imposter, fake, quack, or double-dealing. Right here in our very great state of Oklahoma you can find this on street corners, farmers markets, and home delivery services. These people set up shop as if they are real farmers and they deceive everyone by their appearance and their claims. They are a joke! Please do us a favor ya'll - start asking the people you buy food from where they farm, how they farm, what inputs they use, and if you can visit their farm. During conversation - if they deny you any information or access, call them out and walk away. Why!? Here's what these people are doing: they go to a food distributor and buy produce etc in bulk (cases upon cases) that comes from 1,000's of miles away. Then they take it in, repackage it, mark it up substantially, and sell it to you claiming that is locally grown! It's absolutely ridiculous and it is happening everyday! This is why we have open farm tours everyday of the week - absolute transparency evokes honesty. If your 'so-called' farmer won't let you visit his or her farm it's because they are a FRAUD or they just don't want you to see how they grow their food. Either of which is bad practice. We wish farming and integrity still went hand in hand, unfortunately that's not the case.
