I wander, it’s what I do because I’m curious. As a photographer my career has meandered through many different types of photgraphy commercial still life, weddings, events, portraiture but the one thing that I always seem to find my way back to is food. For more than a decade I’ve photographed food sources and food culture. I love food and drink, well thought out and delicious food - but seriously who doesn’t?!?! Not only do I love food but I’m interested in the how and why. How is it that a chef can take a simple thing like shrimp and grits and create an orgasmic eating experience? Why does beef taste better from a grass fed cow?  Local, Wild & Fresh combines my love of travel and food and exlpores the food, the food sources, the chefs and foodie culture and tells their story.

The Beginning | Local, Wild & Fresh series

For more than a decade I’ve been exploring fisheries and farms. It first started with a video I had been hired to shoot for a local museum on the shrimping industry in Charleston, South Carolina. On that first morning stepping onto the shrimp trawler The Wind’s of Fortune I knew with certainty that this was the kind of subject matter I wanted my photographic career to be about. For the next few years I worked closely with the Magwood’s, one of South Carolina’s oldest shrimping families as well as other shrimpers in the Charleston area producing a large body of work on the South Carolina shrimp fishing industry. That was my beginning and over the years as I’ve worked with other fisheries and farms my subject matter has begun to focus on locally sourced, traceable and sustainably raised or harvested food.

Below are a few of my favorite images from my upcoming book Shrimper’s Alley about the South Carolina shrimp fisherman local and wild caught but it is the project that started it all for me.
