🥀♤ LOCKE / 18 - JEALOUSY

♤ Before an established relationship, Locke carries his own jealousy with irony toward you:

- Oh, dear. Are you already replacing me with another?

- We are not together, Locke.

- Are you really going to keep up that charm?, how cute.

Or then:

- ... You like THAT type of guy? At this rate I won’t even need to try very hard.

And even:

- It’s dangerous to walk around alone, you know?

- But I was with...

- Yeah, yeah. I know. The same as being alone, dear.

♤ After you are in a relationship, jealousy and protection mix a little.

And, without even realizing it himself, a spark of insecurity also adds itself to the jealousy if you happen to show some correspondence to that other guy beyond innocent casualness.

Since childhood, Locke got used to being perceived by the others around him more as a weapon than as a person.

I mean, you really do see the man in him and not only the lethal weapon specialized in killing demons, right?

♤ Even after you are together, Locke still does not let the jealousy weigh on you.

♤ He does feel jealousy, yes, and to his own displeasure, Locke feels it more than he would like or imagined he would feel.

Even so, he mostly keeps it safe, away from the sunlight, hidden behind relaxed and easygoing ironies.

♤ A deeper degree in the seriousness of this jealousy is when Locke starts speaking lower and closer to you after the usual irony.

Something like:

- I almost thought you had forgotten that you came out with me.

And after getting closer to caress your cheek — disguising that, this way, he was “cleaning” the spot on your skin where the other guy had greeted you with a kiss — Locke lowers his voice, tilting his head and staring at you with one eyebrow raised above his glasses:

- Better establish some boundaries with that guy, don’t you think? I wanted to do that myself, but you are much kinder than I am with these things.

♤ The deepest step of jealousy is when Locke simply says nothing. No irony. No joke. No warning at all.

He simply stands there, serious, staring at you and staring at the other guy; even with his gaze hidden by the lenses of his glasses, it is possible to be certain of the displeasure Locke is feeling in that moment.

This is the worst one because he closes himself off. It is the last stage after all the provocations and ironies. It is the most delicate point to make him turn back, because if it reached that point, it means that at some moment you had to voluntarily cross some boundary; you were the one who deliberately fed some less innocent interaction; you were the one who sought something you should not have been seeking there.

♤ Now, if the one who crossed the boundary was the other guy, well, what can be done?, just breathe in relief when Locke appears speaking casually with you, louder than necessary, passing an arm around your shoulder or waist and placing his own body as a barrier between the two of you; meanwhile he pushes the other guy back, with much more force than necessary; Locke meets his gaze only once, the glasses resting low on his nose, the coldness of his blue irises sending a shiver down the other’s spine.

Locke, now, is not joking.

But you do not need to be scared; after the situation is resolved, Locke is over you much more explicitly worried than usual, wanting to check if you are okay, if the guy really did nothing against you — physically or morally.

Locke will insist and prolong this subject until he is convinced that you were not hurt in absolutely anything.

♤ Why is his heart warm and wanting to speed up while he notices you and Vayne together, talking for half an hour?

♤ The friendship between the two of you warms Locke’s chest for a reason he himself is unaware of: intimacy.

You ended up entering an intimate and exclusive part of his life and his past — not only did you enter, but you accepted it, and began to be part of it intimately, creating a kind of bubble between the three of you — a kind of family.

Locke does not stop to reflect on this; he is internally happy to see the two of you together.

♤ Vayne and Locke tease each other about this when the friendship between the three of you becomes sincere.

♤ Vayne sincerely likes you, but she is also not exactly a well of sentimentality about it.

You become true friends, and depending on how receptive you are with her — and with the dynamic between her and Locke — the two of you could easily become best friends.

Something she would deny, of course, whenever Locke tried to point it out.

♤ (And here is a secret she would rather die before letting Locke or you know about. So, do not let her know I am telling you this.) Vayne is grateful for the human light you are in Locke’s life — and, in a way, in hers too.

Those two spend so much time dealing with demons and grotesque situations involving the dark and fallen part of humanity, that you appearing in their lives was... A beam of light; a safe harbor; a lighthouse pointing toward solid ground.

One moment, they are coming out of a situation where they killed a creature with twisted horns and bulging eyes that dismembered an entire family — the next day, they are at your kitchen table listening to you talk about your grades/work/annoying boss/gossipy coworkers while eating snacks they bought in a village along the way.

It is strange. Maddening in a paradoxical way, because in truth it seems to keep them from effectively going mad.

♤ Vayne will end up defending you in arguments between you and Locke — sometimes even when you are wrong.

I mean, personally with you, she is extremely serious and will give you one hell of a scolding — capable of making you cry depending on how sensitive you are — when you make a mistake or act in a childish, reckless way, or anything similar. But when that same subject comes up between her and Locke alone, Vayne ends up automatically taking your defense.

[Locke]: — Shauna, she was the one who started yelling and fighting for no reason.

[Vayne]: — Okay, but so what? I’m sure you were no saint.

Locke becomes indignant about this. But after everything passes, the complicity between the two of you leaves him almost jealous — in an affectionate way, of course.

♤ Vayne does not like seeing the two of you fighting, at odds with each other. She does not interfere deeply in the matter, but a kind of silent mourning hangs over her when she is forced to stand between one and the other.

Discreetly and subtly, she tries to mediate your reconciliation — she would prefer a thousand times the loving couple you are over this black and cutting cold threatening your relationship with Locke.

♤ Freedom, my dear. That word is very good to describe a relationship with him.

Not a “you do whatever you want, I do whatever I want, nothing has consequences, it does not matter if it hurts you.”

It is a freedom with a strong root in trust: Locke does not stay on top of you, monitoring your steps, your conversations, your friendships, your tastes, etc.

From the moment he trusts you, Locke TRULY trusts you — and his feelings are not confused by the poisonous thoughts that you would come to break that trust.

However, Locke is not indifferent at all to your insecurities. Just make it clear if it is something involving low self-esteem so he knows exactly what he is dealing with, okay?

Locke values the truth. A lot.

Do not try to hide your demons behind masks of possessive concern.

Show them directly to Locke; he is not afraid of demons.

♤ He loves when you give him kisses on the neck. Especially the surprise ones, when he is distracted, relaxed in some room of the house, and suddenly you appear behind him, wrap your arms around his shoulders and kiss him there, without warning or reason.

His smile is immediate.

♤ He is not very much the type to be the first to take your hand so you can hold it and walk around; he has nothing against it, it is just not a natural or automatic instinct of his.

But he likes it when you take the initiative and casually intertwine your fingers with his.

— Are you afraid of getting lost, sweetheart?

Regardless of how you prefer it: tighter, softer, a subtle brushing because of how close you are — in that case, the expectation that you will seek his hand is high, but Locke also has fun controlling himself so he does not hold your hand. He prefers not to feel like he is forcing you to stay there, following the steps at his rhythm.

♤ He would never admit it out loud, but Locke is the type who finds you 1000% more attractive when you are wearing something of his — especially his favorite coat.

♤ Locke is no master in the kitchen, he only knows the basics — but he knows how to do the basics VERY well. So, he likes leaving food ready for you from time to time, his chest strangely warmed every time he receives your compliments for something so simple and common.

Moments like that end with him beside your ear, speaking softly, with that smooth voice, some ironic comment.

But his heart is just kind of drowned in a love Locke does not know if he will ever know how to process and deal with properly — so, he simply moves forward and finishes with a kiss on your cheek, reminding you that the dishes that night were on you.

♤ When you need to wake up early, Locke purposely holds you in bed for a few more minutes. It does not matter if you resist amid the tickles or surrender to his charm and accept the soft kisses across your face, he only wants that moment stolen from your time.

♤ He learned from you the taste for a more domestic life. At first, Locke would often take you out so you could have some moments together, alone. However, as time passed and things between you deepened, more and more often, you and Locke will have an entire day together, at home itself, long lazy afternoons with you lying over him, and Locke absentmindedly caressing some part of your body, a random conversation flowing without horizon, following random directions into disconnected subjects until, when the two of you realize it, the evening dew has become too cold to be ignored.

Yes. Locke begins to perceive this way the value of stability and safety — begins to understand the meaning of home.

♤ Definitely, do not even try to go around messing with the weapons he uses to hunt demons, especially the nails.

— Kitten, that thing was not made for hanging pictures on the wall.

He does not want you to hurt yourself with things made to wound such horrendous creatures.

♤ In more general terms, Locke would not exactly have a striking insight before that. He would find you interesting at some point; would get involved with you naturally, without wanting or expecting much. And then, one day, he would be ready to go all the way to hell to hunt down any demon that tried to threaten you.

♤ I mean, okay, you have been together for a while. Locke knows he feels something more for you, otherwise, he would not be there for half an hour caressing your hair while you doze against his chest in the middle of the afternoon, in the middle of the week.

But the depth of it, the intensity, the reality?, Locke only realizes all at once when your life is put at risk and he prioritizes you above his life or anyone else’s.

Not a blind altruism; it is the idea of seeing you suffer that wounds him more than if he himself were the one being wounded; it is not wanting to see anything but his girl safe, without needing to know lonely pain the way he himself came to know it.

♤ After the whole storm passes — some lives having been lost — and you are there: scratched, wounded, terrified, but THERE, Locke is hugging you with so much strength that you can feel both your own body complain and his tremble lightly; his silence is heavy, cut only by rough breathing, as if the adrenaline were still in his veins, ready to attack everything all over again.

♤ Locke does not want to put you down, he just finds it far too unnecessary for you to let yourself be carried away by jealousy in a case like this.

— Shauna, sweetheart? What is it, if I hug my mother, do you think I am going to replace you too?

(It is obvious that he would never hug his mother.)

But, depending on your personal level of sensitivity, Locke will end up hurting you with those comments sooner or later.

♤ It is not on purpose, truly not. But do you really think that, if he truly wanted another woman who was not you, Locke would force himself to be with you?

In his head, that is unthinkable.

The problem is: this is in his head, and not on his lips.

Locke has internalized so deeply that he truly loves you, and that Vayne reaches the level of a sister to him, that Locke does not grasp at first that this is not deeply obvious to you too — so he never said anything about it.

♤ How deeply his interaction with Vayne affects you will influence his reaction with almost the same weight.

A sideways glance? A displeased grimace? A death glare?

As soon as he notices it, Locke will be kissing your grumpy little pout at the first opportunity that appears.

Locke’s arm will leave Vayne’s shoulders and settle, comforting and firm, over YOUR shoulders. A little wink over his glasses and a confident crooked smile; his attention is on you even if the conversation with Vayne is about something completely strange to you.

♤ From here on, anything more explosive will put the two of you in a minefield.

Locke will certainly not be happy at all with you confronting him, implying that you would only be happy if he and Vayne stopped having contact.

Dear, not even his mother managed to put a collar around his neck; if you try to do that, you will see him leave irritated through the front door.

Silent treatment?

Locke will make two or three attempts, and after that:

— You are the one who chose it, sweetheart.

And the two of you will spend DAYS without talking — and no, he will not change his behavior just to do what you want.

On the other hand, Locke also will not be playing any little jealousy game with you — your life goes on, his life goes on. At some point, someone will have to take the first step.

♤ Locke will confront you pretty quickly if you try to hide; that forced smile, that overly excited voice, that way of changing the subject so easily and sweetly...

Dear, he has glasses that amplify the distorted colors of the lie inside your soul; it almost offends him that you think you REALLY can lie to him.

In this case, Locke is the one who pulls away, almost in a silent treatment. He does not deal well with lies, especially those coming from the only person he trusts with his own soul. He tries, in his own way, to show himself available for you to vent, but insisting on a blatant lie...

Locke probably did not even realize that you are like this because of jealousy — as soon as he saw the lie, everything else became somewhat blurred to him.

♤ Finally, we are out of the thorns (or not?)

Locke can deal with your jealousy, no matter how deep and intense it is, as long as you are honest.

At any moment, in any way, tell Locke the truth. Even if you look like a 5-year-old child stammering because you do not know how to express yourself properly emotionally; Locke will not be irritated at you for feeling jealousy specifically toward Vayne; he also will not be some renowned lecturer in a comforting speech.

Maybe the two of you end up in an argument, depending on your temperament.

Maybe the conversation does not even reach the end because you are too sensitive and end up crying — because Locke always ends up pulling you into his arms when you honestly fall apart in front of him.

Maybe Locke makes some sarcastic and mocking comment that makes your feelings seem diminished — but later he appears with an informal and completely improvised apology, but an honest one.

♤ In the end, the solution will be something between Locke convincing you that there is no reason for you to be jealous of Vayne and you convincing Locke that maybe your heart is still too marked by something from the past to be able to deal with so much intimacy between him and another woman like Vayne.

♤ When you start praising Vayne’s qualities to justify your “I-have-a-reason-to-be-jealous” argument, Locke rolls his eyes while you narrate your list.

— Oh, please, Locke. Are you really going to ask me not to compare myself with Shauna Vayne? She hunts demons, she is beautiful, she commands respect with just one look, she is beautiful, she kicks the backside of any clueless person who bumps into her, she is pretty and does not even need to try, she is strong, and....
