Song Review: Bob Weir and Wolf Bros feat. Susan Tedeschi - “Angel from Montgomery/Sugaree” (Live, Aug. 25, 2019)

Though it’s only mildly rehearsed and parts of it were made up on the spot, Susan Tedeschi’s cameo singing “Angel from Montgomery/Sugaree” with Bob Weir and Wolf Bros at Lockn’ is the kind of one-time-only gem that makes the Virginia festival so intriguing.

Playing electric rhythm guitar and handling lead vocals, Tedeschi is the ideal sibling to fill out Wolf Bros’ minimalist sound. For 13 minutes, she leads the trio-cum-quartet through the John Prine/Grateful Dead amalgamation that’s a standard part of Tedeschi Trucks Band setlists and keeps the loose performance from unraveling when Weir switches from acoustic to electric guitar mid-song and when he tries to sing words he’s unfamiliar with.

Train-wrecky on the one hand, this sit-in is ultimately and absolutely charming, particularly toward the end when Tedeschi pulls Weir, drummer Jay Lane and bassist Don Was back from the brink and answers Weir’s don’t you tell them that you know me thusly:

I won’t tell ’em that I know your name Bobby Weir, no I won’t now, she sings in her trademark rasp before the occasionally bumpy performance comes in for a smooth landing.
