Dead & Company to Play Second Post-final-tour Sphere Residency in 2025

Those Dead & Company Final Tour T-shirts are looking sillier by the day.

The Grateful Dead spinoff - which embarked on a much-ballyhooed “final tour” in 2023 - is planning its second post-final-tour Las Vegas Sphere residency beginning in 2025.

Advertised as a “celebrat(ion) of our 10-year anniversary,” the 18-show residency will unfold over six weekends in March, April and May.

The run is also reportedly touted as the band’s “only Sphere shows in 2025,” leaving open the possibility of concerts in other venues as well.

Dead & Company played 30 Sphere shows earlier this year.

Which just proves that while the music plays the band, the band plays the fans.

Steve Kimock, Wolfpack Men Join Wolf Bros; Livestream Sampler Proves More = Merrier

Add 40 percent of the Wolfpack and a former Other One to the on-stage fam and the Wolf Bros are like a new band.

When Bobby Weir & the Wolf Bros Trio hit the stage in - and began a livestream from - California on April 7, violinist Mads Tolling, horn blower Brian Switzer and guitarist Steve Kimock were on stage with Weir, drummer Jay Lane and bassist Don Was. As a two-guitar sextet, the former Trio was thus aurally buffed, despite Weir’s decision to play lead and his lyrical lapses on “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl.” A surprising choice set to a sprightly arrangement, it followed “Cassidy,” which was truncated on the giveaway portion of the webcast.

Tolling and Switzer split for the subsequent “Loser,” which unfolded slowly and was sung poorly by Weir with Lane (who tosses in a sweet Susie for old times’ sake) on backgrounds. Kimock’s slow-build solo - which starts with subtle tapping - is the winningest part of this “Loser.”

When the free stuff returned at the beginning of set two, the quartet began with “The Winners,” which proved the Bros can sustain an upbeat tempo; Weir can sing songs that are in his register; and Weir is crazy to take leads when Kimock is on stage.

The Pack men were back for “China Cat Sunflower,” which proved Weir’s disdain for upbeat tempos and his inability to sing songs in Jerry Garcia’s register. Thankfully, Tolling and Switzer locked into a riff that seemed to inspire the rest of the band, but just as things were building, Weir - with one of exaggerated gestures - instructed the band to bring it back down.

Have you ever heard Weir and Lane sing “I Know You Rider?”

No reason to start.

Molly Tuttle, Ketch Secor and J.D. Souther Bring “Heartache” Last Night to Wolf Bros Stage

Bob Weir apparently hears wisdom in bringing Molly Tuttle on stage and relegating her to rhythm guitar and background vocals.

The folks listening at home, meanwhile, hear a skeletal and meandering version of “West L.A. Fadeaway” that neither Tuttle nor fiddler Ketch Secor could - or was allowed to - rescue from the Wolf Bros Trio’s languid rendering or Weir’s atonal lead electric guitar.

The guest-filled Grateful Dead track was one of a handful given away from the Trio’s webcast of its April 5 show in California.

Another guest, J.D. Souther, joined Weir as the two mucked about on a work-in-progress that’s been known first as “I Know Nothing Blues” then as “You Again.” They played it as an acoustic duo and with the Bros’ rhythm section - both went nowhere.

Souther then tried something else. And when that immediately fizzled, Tuttle and Secor re-emerged for a sloppy, incoherent, probably unrehearsed “Heartache Tonight.”

The giveaway began with the Trio playing “Hell in a Bucket,” which worked relatively well in this format, and “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo,” which did not, owing to the turgid tempo, Weir’s inability to sing in Jerry Garcia’s register and Jay Lane’s inability to sing in harmony.

Bob Weir and J.D. Souther Practice in Front of Paying Audience

Bob Weir and J.D. Souther decided to bring what passes for a songwriting session to the Wolf Bros Trio stage April 4 in California. It began with Souther singing some shit about being there the previous evening - along with some of the fans - before Weir cut him off and launched into a mix of “Easy to Slip” and “Jack Straw” while calling out chord changes and improvising vocals.

Not. Good.

Souther followed up with his own “You’re Only Lonely,” which Weir, the Bros and Wolfpack violinist Mads Tolling hadn’t seem to have learned.

Not. Good.

The free livestream sample began promisingly enough with Weir, Tolling, drummer Jay Lane and bassist Don Was playing a fairly uptempo rendition of “Friend of the Devil” that was mildly successful despite Lane’s off-key falsetto background and Weir’s abrasive electric-guitar tone. After Tolling split, “Bertha” came off sounding like a garage band waiting for its lead player and singer to show up.

Not. Good.

This is one instance where the cheapskates taking in the free sample at home may have made a better decision than the concertgoers.

Song Review(s): Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros Trio - “The Music Never Stopped” -> “Easy Answers” and “I Know Nothing Blues” and “She Knows What I’m Thinkin’” with J.D. Souther (Live, April 3, 2023)

There’s something ironic about the music barely starting inside “The Music Never Stopped.”

But that’s precisely what occurred when Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros Trio played a languid, glorified-rhythm-section version of the Grateful Dead song replete with the worst background vocals this side of RatDog. Drummer Jay Lane and bassist Don Was built a rickety foundation under Weir’s clangy, dissonant electric guitar and the “Music” was shaky.

This morphed into “Easy Answers,” which, while performed more solidly, is not a good song.

The segue - which did not include the typical “Music” coda - was part of the livestream giveaway from the Trio’s April 3 gig in California. It was paired with the second-set-opening sequence in which Weir and J.D. Souther improvised a song - tentatively titled “I Know Nothing Blues” - before playing their recent co-write, “She Knows What I’m Thinkin’.”

The former borrowed musically from “Looks Like Rain”/“Black Throated Wind” and featured Souther on acoustic and Weir on electric guitar as they sang:

What’s your name/where you going/where you come from/and how you been/tell me everything that I’ve been missing/by not seeing you again

As on-stage rehearsals go, this was borderline embarrassing. Yet, the befuddled audience shouted encouragement and the subsequent “Thinkin’” was relatively solid. Given what preceded it, it almost had to be.
