It was a warm day, when spring was just beginning to show itself and the bitter cold of winter was finally fading. School was going to start soon. Seiji had stepped outside to get a breath of fresh air when he saw Mika racing towards him–he had nearly forgotten that he was supposed to meet her today to see a movie and then get lunch. Her face was alight with excitement and that particular kind of affection she had for him, the kind that seemed to never run out no matter what. Before he could open his mouth to greet her she held something out for him.
“Happy anniversary!” she said, breathless and smiling. “We’ve been dating for almost five months! That’s such a long time, isn’t it? And I wouldn’t change any of it!”
Seiji cautiously took the item that Mika had extended to him, word momentarily being chased from his mind as he turned it over in his hands. It was a book–the sort of science-fiction novel he had loved to read as a child, hiding in his father’s study to keep away from Namie’s too-intense gaze, if only for a little while.
“I asked around,” Mika chirped. “A few classmates saw you reading a book like this a few times, and I figured you liked them! Do you? Do you like it?”
Seiji caught Mika’s shining eyes and actually smiled, a soft but genuine display of rare happiness. “I do,” he said at last. “Thank you, Mika.” He was caught off guard by the swell of warmth in his chest, by a feeling of safety he had long-since abandoned as a boy but which somehow found him again as he looked at the cover of the novel. Mika was grinning at him, and for a moment he thought she might even cry with joy before she simply laughed, loud and bright and clear in the peaceful afternoon air.
“I’m glad! Now, what movie did you want to see?”
His smile remained for a few moments longer while she linked hands with him and tugged him towards the direction of town, chattering happily all the way.
