A few weeks ago we got a call. “I just got my engagement photos back, I should have called you in the first place, help.”
That’s like our Bat Signal.
Within a couple of hours, we had scheduled a re-shoot with two longtime friends for the next weekend and some crossed fingers for weather we could work with.
The engagement and family photo shoot for Clint, Dana and Osiris is a great lesson in spontaneity and going with the flow for us, and anyone planning their own portrait session.
We knew we wanted to shoot this outdoors loving family outside and near the water, but at the last minute, our go-to spot of Bellingham’s Marine park didn’t feel right. Clint knew of a hidden gem called Locust Beach, a spot in North Bellingham neither of us had ever been to before. With the fantastic climbing trees, the waterfalls, and the completely empty, rocky beach, this spot turned out to be the absolutely perfect location for this shoot.
An hour or so before we are schedule to meet, it begins to rain. Ugly rain. With a picture of frizzy hair and miserable 8 year olds in our head, we call Dana and ask her if she wants to risk it...the consensus is yes, let’s give it a shot.
The weather was cool, and overcast, just before sunset, with the rain diminishing for just long enough to take the perfect photos of this family with out squinty eyes or frustrating lens flare. An added bonus is we brought umbrellas to protect the equipment that turned into fantastic props, and extremely entertaining for Osiris, resulting in the photos Alix shot of him just goofing around, being our favorites of the entire day.
So the lessson here my friends is “just say yes”. Just say yes when a friend asks you to help her out at the last minute, just say yes when the weather seems iffy, just say yes to new locations, and most importantly, just say yes to adorable children with umbrellas.
