This animation was inspired by the picture plane from the book ‘understanding comics’ from Scott McCloud. I wanted to see how a transition would look like between a minimal and more realistic portrait, and this is the result.

I was playing around with custom brushes in photoshop and ended up with this little guy.

With this self portrait I was aiming for a specific mix between realism and a more cartoon-like style.

I’m still trying to get better with more realistic looking characters like this one. I think it’s great to sketch a non existing character and slowly add more detail until it feels like a believable and convincing character.
