English Kitchen Garden Loganberries
The king of all soft fruit in the garden! The loganberry is a hybrid cross between Rubus ursinus (R. vitifolius) 'Aughinbaugh' (octaploid) as the female parent and Rubus idaeus 'Red Antwerp' (diploid) as the male parent (pollen source); the loganberry is hexaploid. It was accidentally created in 1881 in Santa Cruz, California, by the American judge and horticulturist James Harvey Logan (1841–1928).
It made it to England quickly, by 1897 it was in gardens here. It isn't the same as a Tayberry (which is the result of crossing two hybrid plants of a blackberry and a raspberry).
Delicate, sweet and BIG, loganberries make the very best jam.
We planted a loganberry whip (single stem) three years ago in our fruit cage and this is the first time it has fruited. WOW- what a crop! I made thirteen jars this week and lots more berries are coming. We've been eating them with cream, in trifles, on cereal - just YUM! It also has the advantage of fruiting before our autumn raspberries and our blackberries.
Never give up your plants will ALWAYS surprise you. . . These babies are curtesy from the loganberry that nearly died due to neglect and transport shock when we moved and yet here they are!!! #bloosselfreliance #thebloopixie #gardenersofinstagram #gardentotable #loganberries #foodie https://www.instagram.com/p/CgFXOayq01t/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
