Ultra-Orthodox Jews' Rockland rally to highlight dangers of Internet
Several thousand ultra-Orthodox Jews are expected to pack the Rockland Boulders baseball stadium Thursday night for a rally about the potential dangers of the Internet.
The event follows rallies last year — including a gathering of an estimated 60,000 people at Citi Field and a tennis stadium in Queens — that warned of the Internet’s dangers to members of the cloistered Hasidic Jewish world. Others there promoted some uses of the Internet as positive.

Janet Hasson's 15 minutes are up
This afternoon Janet Hasson, publisher of the West Nyack, NY based Journal News, removed from its lohud.com web site the controversial map showing the names and addresses of firearms permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. Hasson's full statement is as follows:
"With the passage this week of the NYSAFE gun law, which allows permit holders to request their names and addresses be removed from the public record, we decided to remove the gun permit data from lohud.com at 5 pm today.
While the new law does not require us to remove the data, we believe that doing so complies with its spirit. For the past four weeks, there has been vigorous debate over our publication of the permit data, which has been viewed nearly 1.2 million times by readers. One of our core missions as a newspaper is to empower our readers with as much information as possible on the critical issues they face, and guns have certainly become a top issue since the massacre in nearby Newtown, Conn. Sharing as much public information as possible provides our readers with the ability to contribute to the discussion, in any way they wish, on how to make their communities safer.
We remain committed to our mission of providing the critical public service of championing free speech and open records."
Even in defeat, Hasson remains pretty much a useless twat.
The reality behind her decision no doubt has little to do with the passage of the NYSAFE law. It certainly has more to do with the fact that the court of public opinion immediately weighed in sharply against her decision to publish the map in the first place. The fact that enterprising individuals immediately published Hasson's own personal information probably contributed to the decision as well, as did the fact that she was excoriated by a number of New York elected officials.
Now that she has a convenient excuse to cover her second thoughts about having published the map in the first place, she has opted to take the low road and go down swinging rather than simply admit that she overstepped her role as a "journalist".
Still, you'd be hard-pressed to claim that she didn't get exactly what she wanted from the whole charade. It's probably unprecedented for the Journal News to get 1.2 million hits on a single page.
