What’s your fan theory about Mako if Naoki and San didn’t die?

Would he be an exceptional kid and follow the expectations his parents set for him or would he be more rebellious? Maybe a mix of both. His intelligence and curiosity could get him in some hot water.

Oh and what do you think Mako’s earliest memory would be?

OH MY GOD I love thinking about what could have been if San and Naoki had raised Mako and Bolin. They deserved to be loved and taken care of!!! 😭

Obviously there's a strong possiblitiy that they never would have met Korra or Asami, which is wild to think about!!! But here's how I think things would go, generally.

I'm not sure what Mako's earliest memory would be, but I like the idea that it's something really early, like being a toddler and cuddling with his Mom and Dad after Bolin was born and they're all snuggling up together resting or something 🧡

I think the boys would be generally happy being raised by their mom and dad. Maybe at a certain point, they'd learn about Naoki's history and the work she does to help people from Penquan Island. I'm not sure how much she'd tell them, and how much they'd know about her work. And they'd learn more about their Dad's side of the family too.

importantly, they'd go to school. I think San and Naoki would really encourage them to get a formal education.

I think Mako is truly a very smart guy. I think if he'd had the opportunities to partake in a formal education, he would go very far in academics. He might have had a few rebellious moments through his life but I think Mako has always been a more serious child and I don't think he's got a very rebellious streak. I think he was very shy throughout his life, and in canon he had to get over that pretty quick to survive, but in a safe, loving upbringing I think that shyness might have lingered quite a bit longer and it might have taken him a longer time to gain confidence especially in social situations.

I know you didn't ask about Bolin, but I think he would be pretty similar, actually. Mako did a pretty good job of raising Bolin so I think Bolin felt fairly secure growing up. Obviously with his parents raising him and more safety and security in his life with housing and food, he would maybe not be so eager to endear himself to everyone around him (which I think is a survival tactic he developed) I'm sure he'd still be the outgoing guy who wants everyone to like him, and maybe would get in trouble for being a class clown and just generally being kinda hyperactive. I wonder the brother's bond would be if they'd been lovingly raised by their parents? I like to think they'd be close, but maybe not as codependent as they tend to be in canon.

Also... I REALLY love the idea that San and Naoki would have more kids... I have this horrible angsty HC that Naoki was pregnant when she died, but if she didn't die I think they easily could have had two or three more kids... I'm not attached to the gender of any potential younger siblings, but I think it would be fun if they had a house full of four or five rambunctious boys all with bending 🤣

Now. Here's where I think we can get some top tier Wuko content into this AU... I love the idea that Mako would be such a great student that he could go on to University... Republic City University... Guess who he meets there!!! This super spoiled rich party boy from Ba Sing Se (I love the idea that he's distant enough that people are like 'idk I think that Wu kid is like, related to the earth queen or something?' but no one actually knows he's technically a prince).

I have mentioned before I'm not much for college AUs but I'm sure there's some fun college AU stuff with could throw in there, especially with the class differences between them. I love Wu being there just because his family is trying to get rid of him for a while, and he sees it as a fun opportunity to let loose and party and be free for once in his life. He probably cuts class all the time lol. Meanwhile Mako's there on a scholership where he had to work really hard but he also has to work to cover living expenses. since he lives in RC he probably commutes so he can still live at home, plus his work schedule... And I think it would be a really fun enemies to lovers kind of deal with Mako not being able to stand Wu at first because of how he treats college like an opportunity for fun while to Mako it's an opportunity to give himself a bright future but hard work. But don't worry eventually they will find common ground and fall in love and Mako will realize there's more to Wu than that party boy persona.

and this leaves a beautiful opportunity for Wu to meet Mako's parents! I love the idea of Mako bringing his boyfriend home to his family's small home and Wu meeting Mako's little brother(s) and his mom and his dad, and by this point his dad is actually communicating with his family back in Ba Sing Se somewhat regularly, like he and his mom exchange letters. and after meeting Wu he mentions Mako's new boyfriend/friend (Idk if I want to think about homophobia here but if the EK is regressive maybe San would omit the dating part of things) and Yin would see the name and put two and two together SO FAST because of course she knows exactly everything going on in the royal family including the fact that the royal family sent the young Prince Wu, distant heir to the throne, to Republic City University and she would freak out lol.

Idk where things would go from there. But I think there's an interesting story to be told!
