nothing like walking into a pub — because you’re starving — in a town you’ve never been to before, right at that time of saturday evening when the football is showing (you don’t watch football), and it’s packed to the brim with tight-knit locals, some of whom turn around to glare at you when you open the creaking door, to make you feel like you’re in an american werewolf in london or ruby sunday in 73 yards

realised there was no space to sit down so had to leave, open google maps and find an eatery that’s still open. now i’m at a lebanese place — what can i say, i love england with my whole heart and probably even prefer pub food to middle eastern cuisine, but ultimately i feel far more at home among other immigrants. sure i’m white but i’m about as far from Pub Person as you can get. and also suffer from social anxiety. maybe they weren’t glaring, maybe they’re a lovely welcoming community. ah well
