We all know people who have been so devastated by death, disease, depression, war, violence, that the God they were taught about as a child, who would protect them from all harm seems not to exist. Because, in truth, God is not a “bodyguard God” protecting us from all harm. Instead, as Jesus wept with Mary and Martha, so God weeps with us. So we work through the story of Jesus and Lazarus, and what God’s response is to the most difficult challenges of life.
Jesus promises living water to the Samaritan woman at the well. But, she came for water! Ever get frustrated when God doesn’t seem to answer your prayers or answer quickly enough? What’s the point of Jesus being God anyway if he doesn’t fix things when we ask?
