So I'm tired of the hollow rituals

and how we give each other

permission to judge and condemn,

to look down and condescend

with mass-thoughts and recycled phrases

tossing hell-fire with tongues,

wearing masks and disguising

just how sinful our lives are

by writing cheques and giving money -

flaunting our Pharisee tendencies - 

so we lack where we shouldn't

and we can wear hideous self-righteousness like a badge of honour.

And we hem each other in

wear our veneers

and like sheep confuse God with a man

perform our prayers, cry out, shout amen.

And I'm tired of it,

sitting with that feeling of

"this is so contrived,

not personal, too public,

this is devoid of that quiet suggestion

that God is kind and smiling

and holding your hand even when you are lost".

And so I pull away

because I do not want to be corrupted.

I would like to be myself always,

and not lie, or act, just to fit your boxes.
