About a month in
I’m about a month into the London improv scene, and I can’t believe how hungry the entire scene is as a whole. No one is viewing this as a stepping stone to a career in comedy, and no one treats their indie team as a speed bump to the road to main stage/a house team/tour co. It couldn’t be more refreshing.
The downside, of course, is that there are significantly fewer performance venues here. I’ve been spoiled performing in Chicago and New York, and the chance to play every week (and certain cases, every night) is not so much an anomaly but almost expected.
Now what does this mean? Unexpectedly, my work has seemed a bit fuller and more inspired - and even those off nights where I’m not firing, I get up to speed much faster than before. They say that sometimes the best thing you can do for your improv is to stop improvising, and I've never been able to fully embrace that until now - and now that I have? It's all so much more enjoyable.
The downside, of course, is now that I'm enjoying it more I find myself wanting to perform more. Life is a wheel that just keeps turning, and turning, and turning.
