A Scarab beetle invaded my dreamscape last night. The symbol of clairvoyance & spirit communication. Were my ancestors trying to contact me or had I glimpsed a bit of The Mummy as I flicked between channels? The Scarab is a symbol of decluttering, removing drama & obstacles from your life. Change may be circling you & your artistic integrity may be challenged, no time to be stubborn, you may have to adjust to new regimes & environments. The Scarab is a survivor. The message is that by being resilient & showing persistence it becomes obvious that you have been treading the correct path, new opportunities may now suddenly be revealed. The Scarab can hint at fears over aging or sudden realisations around our mortality. The triple body sections correspond to “mind, body, spirit” and can represent a spiritual unfolding. In Ancient Egypt the Scarab was linked to the sun God Ra. Daily the Scarab moved the sun toward the horizon heralding the new day; representing reinvention & renewal. Tarot today – The Recipe. I start every day by pulling a Key from my Major Arcana. This forms part of my morning ritual that has grown to involve chants, exercise, mantras, tokens, diet, coffee. In fact a myriad components that make me feel OK, ready to face the day. Any of these delicate ingredients can be thrown by unexpected behaviour by someone else, a diary change or anything that unbalances the elements that make up ‘life’ in todays always on crazy world. When you have found the base beliefs or components that make you happy & forms your default setting, cherish them, aim to do more of those & instinctively move away from those aspects that bring up negativity & challenge. Very occasionally I am asked to delve deep in to my history & give the type of readings my mother was fond of giving, and receiving. Our favourite reader was the famous west country mystic Madame Tamar who started me on my Tarot obsession many decades ago. Madame Tamar mostly used normal playing cards, she told me Tarot cards were too scary for her clientele. She was so gifted I don't think she needed any oracle at all. I am fortunate enough to have inherited my mother’s paraphernalia, her crystal ball, cartomancy cards. I still collect vintage cartomancy decks, I love the interpretations. If appropriate I will sometimes give readings, usually at functions, that dip in to that persona. The type of gypsy reading that promise tall dark strangers, exciting journeys. I stop short of the slightly darker messages my mother was fond of delivering. Exciting affairs, disastrous consequences. Looking back it has to said she was mostly right & had absolutely no qualms saying it exactly as she saw it. She would always carefully send you on your way with a spring in your step, a sparkle in her Scorpio eyes. I don't believe that this type of reading undermines the true Tarot experience as long as you are clear in your intentions. They are primarily for entertainment, parties & events, they form some of the rich history of the contemporary cartomancers art. So, here I finish my latest journey through the Majors. Back where I should be at the Fool. My earliest memory is coming over the brow of a hill to open fields & being dazzled by the sun, I remember the people there, they were not my mother. I can actually connect to the wide eyed astonishment of that young boy. That is the energy of the Fool, as the life breath, literally saying 'W O W !' at everything, just before jumping off the precipice to manifest this lifetime, this incarnation as a vehicle of light. And then I saw him, dazzled by the sun, moving erratically, he was distracted by everything. His dog jumped repeatedly, the dangerous precipice only inches away.
