Genuine question, how do people survive with long nails keep their nails long???

I’ve been trying to grow mine but as soon as I hit three weeks without cutting I become too overwhelmed with the sensation (too aware of the feeling of the tips???) and just cut them off again almost by impulse 😭

For context I’ve been keeping them short consistently for almost 10 years bc I used to play a lot of musical instruments and they just got on the way. I don’t play that often anymore and I would like to experiment with my nails and try more complicated designs and stuff
